Bikes kids bikes
Buying a bike for your child is a very important decision, especially if you are an avid cyclist yourself. There are so many issues and factors to consider before making your final choice.
Is the bike just the right size for your child?
Is the height of the bike in accordance with your child's age?
Will your child outgrow the bike too soon?
Hopefully we can help make your decision easier...
Choose the right bike
For younger children get a bike that is simple and easy to use. Single speed bikes suit the youngest kids as multiple gears can be cumbersome and confusing to use, complicating the experience of learning to ride. Bikes designed for younger children are usually simple and will handle riding on both paved and level dirt surfaces.
For older kids, it is important to remember their style requirements. Mountain bikes are good for off road cycling as well as roads and paved trails. BMX-style bikes are meant for dirt jumping, off-road racing and trick riding. Find out what kind of riding your child intends to do, and choose a bike that will accommodate his or her wishes.
Get the fit right
Children's bike sizes are determined by wheel size diameter, not seat tube or frame size as in adult sizes. Once a child out grows these kids sizes, they move on to use smaller, low step over, framed adult bikes.
12 inch wheel diameter : 2 - 4 years
14 inch wheel diameter : 3 - 5 years
16 inch wheel diameter : 5 - 7 years
18 inch wheel diameter : 6 - 8 years
20 inch wheel diameter : 7 - 9 years
24 inch wheel diameter : 9 - 11 years
26 inch wheel diameter : 11+ years
Play it safe
While learning to ride a bike is an important phase in a child's life, it is equally important that they're safe. Helmets Ensure that your child wears a helmet at all times. Let your child choose the model of helmet they would like, making it easier to get them to wear it, and ensure that the helmet is fitted properly.
