BMX Cables & Gyros

BMX ‘s don’t have gears, and many only rely on a single brake, so cabling a BMX is relatively simple. The only time where it can be complicated is when a brake is used for freestyle riding, that involves the bars being rotated through 360 degrees or more. If the cables were used in the conventional way, then spinning the bars would simply result in a tangles mess.

A Gyro is a device designed for BMX cable routing, specifically the rear brake cable, to allow the bars to be rotated freely, and still maintain full operation of the brake. With this device tricks such as ‘tailwhips’ and ‘barspins’ are made possible. Because of the design, which splits a single brake cable into two cables so that they can pass either side of the headtube through two metal discs, a specific replacement cable must be bought for this type of brake. One downside to the system is that it can be a bit more fiddly to set up and maintain than a standard cable.
