Windstopper fronted ones are particularly useful for keeping the wind off your chest and can be good as an additional layer over a jacket on the coldest of winter days.
Some light weight gilets have a mesh back, this is particularly useful if you are racing in cool weather as your number can be seen through. Look for full length zips, high collar, a good tight fitting shape and it's pack size for putting in a pocket.
