Heart Rate Monitors

Monitoring your heart rate will make your training more effective and help you to become more in tune with your body. Checking your heart rate regularly, during exercise and at rest, can tell you how hard you are working during exercise, make sure you stay in target training zones and even act as an early warning for fatigue or illness.

If you are training for a specific reason such as losing weight, increasing endurance or developing speed it's important to exercise at the right effort level. Sports scientists have developed training zones based on heart rate, this helps us to understand what's going on in the body and make sure we are targeting our exercise in the right way.

Heart rate monitors are in two parts: a strap that goes around your chest picking up the signals from your heart in the same way as an ECG and a wrist watch receiver. A basic monitor will simply show your current heart rate and the duration of exercise, the more sophisticated ones allow you to set training zones, record data for review after the session and set timers. At the very top end heart rate monitors can show altitude, act as a speedo for your bike, measure power, record temperatures, have in-built GPS and the data can be wirelessly downloaded for review on your PC.
