Rain wear

Rain - it's unavoidable in the UK but with the right garments riding in the rain need not be an unpleasant experience.

If you are a dedicated cyclist it is unlikely that you are going to get through your cycling life with out ever being caught in the rain. With modern technological garments you can stay dry and comfortable and keep on enjoying your cycling -whatever the weather. One of the main issues for wet weather gear is breathability - how to stay dry by keeping the wet weather out but not trapping sweat in. Good layering with a wicking base layer is key to keeping dampness away from your skin.

Gore-Tex®

Gore-Tex® is one of the leading fabrics for both waterproofing and breathability. Cut is important to avoid any irritating noisy flapping material that will slow you down or get caught on your bike. Drawstrings, high collars and adjustable cuffs all add to a jackets ability to keep you dry. Women are advised to go for a female specific cut to minimise unnecessary bulk.

Protect your legs

Waterproof trousers are an option for commuters as they can be slipped on over your civvies and protect your clothes on short journeys. If you are out for a long ride or training then Lycra tights coated with Teflon or Aqua-repel will help to keep you dry but even once wet Lycra Roubaix holds much of its heat so is the best choice for winter rides.

Keep your feet dry

Overshoes keep your feet warm and -depending on your material choice - dry as well. Your feet are under assault not just from the rain coming down but from the puddles you splash through as well. For road training and commutes consider purchasing mudguards or a down tube guard for off-road riding.

Protect your eyes

Wet weather can play havoc with your eyes and you are more likely to get grit in them from the road - always wear glasses they are protective equipment not a fashion accessory.

Remember - Budget as much as you can for quality waterproof clothing. It really does pay divends and allows you to get out on your bike - whatever the weather - in relative comfort.
