Safety & High Vis
If you are cycling at night or in low light conditions you have to take every precaution you can to make sure you are seen.

Having a good set of bike lights is just part of this. High visibility clothing ensures that when car lights hit you drivers can clearly see you.

High visibility cycle clothing has come along way from the old style luminous yellow Sam Browne belts, although these are still available. Advances in material technology means that you can now wear a jacket that looks a plain matt colour in normal daylight but reflects back light at night - ideal for those who don't like the day-glow yellow look.

Reflective piping is now found on nearly all cycling outer garments and should be looked for when buying jackets, jerseys and leg wear. Bright colours are safer in low light and daytime conditions but make sure they have enough reflective material on them to still be safe at night. In addition to reflective and brightly coloured clothing you can buy belts, snap-on wrist and ankle bands as well as covers for your rucksack or commuter belt.

Remember that you need to be seen from side-on as well as from the front and rear and that reflectors and lights that move on pedals or legs are particularly eye-catching. The more you can do to be seen the better.
