Getting the right tyre for the conditions you ride in can take a bit of thought. Do you stick to the tarmac, do you love ploughing through the mud, or are you an out-and-out racer? Tyres are one area where most choices are about trade-offs, so it’s important to really assess your needs. Mountain bikers have a huge range of tread patterns, including rubber that’s meant for the mud, loose conditions, or the hard-baked earth, while an MTB can be easily converted for commuting duties by fitting a pair of slicks.
