Mongoose Subject BMX Review

Mongoose BMX

Who better to review Evans Cycles' best selling BMX this season - the Mongoose Subject - than our very own BMX Buyer and rider, Stuart Read!

Introducing the Mongoose Subject 2010, an entry level complete BMX for the younger rider looking for the right platform to start hitting the parks, trails and streets! Every rider will have heard of Mongoose, and there is a strong chance that most BMXers will have ridden a Mongoose at some point in their riding career, testament to the brand’s popularity and strength!

Mongoose Subject 2010 BMX - £179.99

Frame

The frame and fork are constructed with Hi-Ten steel, not the lightest material but strong enough to withstand the abuse that it will endure from everyday BMX use. The choice of Hi-Ten steel also allows Mongoose to keep the overall cost down to pack in extra features.

Components

The wheels which will take the most abuse run a 3/8” (10mm) axle up front laced on to a 36 hole alloy front rim, while the rear is built with a burly 14mm axle on a 48 hole rim for extra strength. The two different axle sizes are common with all complete BMXs, and are compatible with aftermarket stunt pegs which are sold to fit these sizes. The seat is attached with an adjustable post, again in the most popular size 25.4mm. If you were looking to upgrade your seat to the lighter pivotal seat format at a later date, they will all fit straight into the frame.

The bikes drive chain is set up with a fresh looking 36 tooth cut-out sprocket, which is linked up to the 13 tooth freewheel at the back, the smallest and lightest freewheel available before moving to a cassette hub. The steering is taken care of with a set of Hi-Ten bars – 7.5” rise which are ideal for the smaller rider. Bigger bars are the current fashion, but will actually hinder younger riders when learning the basic tricks, once the confidence and skill is there this bike will happily take the larger bars to further their progression as a rider.

Extras

The bike is supplied with a set of BMX pegs and a Gyro. The pegs allow you to learn grinds and stalls at skate-parks, or you can choose to run the bike without them, just don’t go grinding your parents walls in their gardens! The Gyro is a cable system that allows the bikes bars to spin all the way round as many times as you like with no hindrance to the brake, perfect for tricks like barspins and tailwhips.

The ride

The geometry of this bike can be found in lots of frames and completes available in all the price points in the market. The head tube and seat tube angles make all the difference to how a bike handles and geometry here sits perfectly for all aspects of BMX. The frame has a short top tube of 20” which will allow smaller riders to ride with confidence and control.

Overall

This is a good looking bike, and it wouldn’t look out of place beneath a much more experienced rider. Yes it is slightly heavy than more expensive models, but it has everything here that you would need from a first BMX. It looks great, won’t break the bank, and can easily be upgraded at a later date to progress with the rider as they start to go bigger and higher! No wonder it’s our top selling BMX. - Stu.
