Evans Cycles
The Perfect Jacket

Cycling jackets come in two types: softshells to keep you warm, and hardshells to keep the rain out. However as the best soft shell jackets are becoming increasingly waterproof, the boundaries are blurring.

Soft or hard shell, there’s no point in keeping out the rain and wind if you lock the sweat in, so breathable fabric is a must. Making a breathable fabric isn’t hard, but making one that’s also water and windproof is a bit trickier. That’s why the more breathable a cycling jacket is, the more money it usually costs.

Generally winters in eastern Britain are dryer and colder than the west. So the ideal jacket may be very different depending on where you live and your style of riding. A West Country roadie might sacrifice some wind or waterproofing for extra breathability, whereas a steady paced Scots commuter may opt for all out weather protection.

There are also other factors to consider in getting the right jacket. A waterproof jacket, for example, should have taped or welded seams and a close fitting collar and cuffs.

Mountain bikers and commuters may prefer a more relaxed cut with plenty of pockets. Roadies may be after something closer fitting ( a layering system only works properly if all the layers touch letting sweat wick all the way out ). Reflective panels are vital for anybody riding on the road. Light tabs for attaching a light are a nice touch too.

Fabric isn’t the only comfort booster: A dropped tail keeps your bum dry. Vents aid temperature control, and rear pockets are handy for a phone and a snack – If you ride with a rucksack check it doesn’t block access to either.

Finally, if you are likely to take your jacket on and off a lot during a ride, check it packs down small enough to stow in a jersey pocket.
