Regular Commuter?
If you're used to cycling in London, then the only main change is simply that the roads will be much busier than normal. The new 'Olympic Route Network' will be closed to cyclists, but TFL say that these are mostly lanes in the centre of busy roads and so not normally suitable for cyclists. There are some changes to cycling networks, and areas of central London (e.g. Hyde Park) will have reduced access. Some of the Barclays Cycle Hire docking points will also be closed during the Games.
New to cycling in London?
If you're using your bike to avoid the tube/bus crush (great idea), our blog post on top commuting tips is a good place to start. The TFL Cycle Journey Planner is a very handy tool to work out your route. TFL also produce a series of cycle route guides, including one covering the Olympic Park. You can order physical copies for free through the link below.
There is free, secure, managed bike parking at all of the Olympic venues, but the opening times do vary. TFL's venue information and Spectator Journey Planner will both tell you how to arrive by bike.
If you want to make more of an outing of it, guided cycle rides are being organised for ticketholders where you ride in groups of up to ten with an experienced ride leader. You will arrive at the cycle parking area for your venue, giving you confidence that you will get there on time without getting lost. The guided rides are free of charge but booking is essential as places are limited.
Cycling Essentials
London will feel very different this summer, so even if you're an experienced city rider it's a good idea to take extra care on the roads. The basic essentials of helmet, high-vis gear (be it a sash, jacket or rucksack cover) and lights are a good place to start.
If you've not used your bike in a while it's a good idea to give it a check-over before you take it out: our blog post below covers the basics. If you'd rather we did the work (or if it needs a bit more TLC than you'd hoped), we provide a range of servicing packages from the Bronze check-up to a Gold full strip-down & re-build.
We spent some time with the Metropolitan Police's Bike Theft Unit a few weeks ago to get the definitive answer on how best to keep your bike safe. We've also filmed a short 'How To' video on locking your bike securely.
