I bought the Granit X-Plus 54/160 HB 230 + EaZy-KF version (Evans: 120941-NA-BLK, Black, 23cm) to replace a totally unsuitable lock sold to me when I bought a Giant Defy 2 road bike. What I like about this lock, and crucially for me, is the weight, the 23cm version weighs just 1.556kg which is nothing considering the protection it offers. The lock uses a double locking bolt in a hardened cross bar, and a patented square 13mm parabolic shackle design, this means that a bike thief has to cut both sides to remove the shackle.

The lock supplied by Evans comes with the ABUS EaZy-KF-holder, there are different brackets available, but the EaZy-KF-holder is the best U-lock bracket I have ever seen, or used for that matter. It gives you a multitude of ways to attach the U-lock because not only can you move the bracket about, the actual EaZy-KF-holder will twist by about 45 degrees as well, plus you can also rotate the clamp on the square shackle. It will attach to round frame tubes with a diameter of 28mm to 36mm.

Because of the brilliant design of the EaZy-KF bracket I can fit it so that the cross bar of the lock is at the bottom of the seat frame, with the shackle pointing up, which means the centre of gravity is shifted lower down. Your not stuck with the usual option of just one position, usually with the cross bar at the top, and that's it. I also recommend you measure your bike frame before you buy so you get the right version. There is a 23cm or a 30cm version, the measurement refers to the inside length of the shackle. The 23cm version has an overall length of 30cm, including the cross bar, so that should make the 30cm version, 37cm long overall, I think, but check.

The catch on the bracket is also very good, it's strong and has a reassuring click when you side the shackle clamp in at an slight angle. A quick flick of your thumb and the lock comes off with ease. It also looks like it will last as its seems very well made and uses a good quality plastic fibre construction.

No bike lock is 100% effective, but this lock coupled with a good chain and padlock for the front wheel, plus a cable for your seat, like the ABUS Cobra 10mm/140cm cable (Evans: 104631-140-NA), will give you piece of mind. To defeat the security on my bike now you will need a portable angle grinder and a pair of heavy duty bolt cutters!

If you feel you need even more security then you could try the original lock I had, which was a Kryptonite New York M18-WL, it has an 18mm shackle and has a double locking bolt, it's also sold by Evans as well. But, be aware, it weighs a humongous 5.9lbs (2.674kg) - way too heavy for a bike that weighs less than 22lbs! Kryptonite list it under power sports on it website; I would personally say it's more suitable for a scooter or motorbike. Kryptonite don't even supply a bracket for it because of the weight issue, you need to carry it in a rucksack or some other ingenious way, I had no end of problems with it.

The ABUS lock is expensive, but it's top quality and the bracket is just brilliant. Don't buy a decent bike and then spend the bare minimum on security, some locks I've seen are just laughable and your expensive bike won't be there when you get back. It's money well spent, hopefully a bike thief will just move on for easier pickings ;-)

I got this particular unit from a local retailer in Singapore (not Evans, sorry!) mainly because of my interest in bicycle touring - and I got the Tubus LOCC (which seems a special order rack from Tubus - see http://www.thetouringstore.com/TUBUS/LOCC/LOCC%20PAGE.htm) which was the mother of all racks to even include a dedicated U-lock mounting bracket, complying to Rixel & Kaul's KlickFix standard (which Ortlieb uses too) - possibly because they're all German, and cross-licensing is a big deal for them too.

Usage wise... the quality of how securely the key confidently slots right into the keyhole is reassuring. The inbuilt dust cover was a major plus, I don't like to try cleaning up the keyhole of road debris in any case. The rubber coating on the shackle was nicely thick and firm too, so I need not worry about scratching paint off my 853 steel frame. The 300mm version is rated 1.6kg, just a minor penalty over the 230mm version. However some concerns about a longer shackle is that there may be more space to squeeze a bottlejack to crack it up. For pretty much the hardcore protection, I use Pitlock skewers for my headset and wheels, along with this U-lock AND an Abus cable with two lasso-heads. Doubt any self-respecting thief would try to even touch my bike, let alone try to cut it free.

With this particular lock, the only drawback was the key system. Aside from nearly scaring myself dead once when I misplaced the card with the replacement code, the main key (with the blue light) was not a smart idea although it sure looks cool resembling a car key - because I clip my keys to my Ortlieb panniers on the outside with a carabiner - in the rain as well. Imagine unlocking the bike in the rain - that can kill the battery/LED by corrosion anyway over time. My LED is now useless (can't be bothered to search for a new LED and battery as well) since I use a headlamp anyway for night-time commuting.

Weight is something that I was ready for. I deliberately chose the 300mm version over the 230mm version since the local dealer found it harder to sell off and hence I got a nice price for it as well.

I tried to "drown" the lock unit by pouring and filling it with tap water - and the unit works well still. I suppose any light lube will do it good - but do NOT use WD40 as WD40 strips lubricants... please read the label before use! I'd reckon Pedro's Syn Lube work fine, or any other aerosol with PTFE/Teflon too.

If in a pinch someone tried to mug me, swinging this lock around WILL inflict serious injury - make sure it doesn't fall to the mugger!

Great function, and the laminated brand "sticker" on the lock body that proclaims ABUS is a quasi-hardcore fashion statement :-)

Great stuff for bicycle touring and regular commuting... as long you're not the thief. Hope this helps!

Don't be fooled, this is one of the best locks you can buy, Abus really research and develop their top of the line locks.

The square schakle laughs at leverage attacks, it's one of the few ice sprayed tested locks and in the case it faces a professional thieve the double bolt mechanism requires two cuts making no buisness for buying really expensive blades for a battery powered angle grinder.

No lock it's ultimate security, but this will make most theives look away (as long as you have properly locked your bicycle)

Transportation bracket it's really nice as it is desing by kick flix.

The big downside, as with any chunky d- lock is weight, this lock is 1.5 kilos.
