Quality components at a reasonable price

I took delivery of this bike about ten weeks ago and have covered just shy of 800 miles on it since. Having previously ridden a 25 year old Peugeot, I thought that a bottom of the range Racer would probably be fairly similar. Having test ridden some, it turned out this was not so. The Streetfire cost me £1000, but really is worth the money. Perhaps the main benefit over some of the cheaper models is the stiffness of the frame. I found that test riding bikes in the £500-£700 range, there tended to be alot more 'flex'. While this makes for a slightly smoother ride, it means that more of your effort goes into making the frame flex, rather than driving you forward. The BMC however makes far lighter work of things, and compared to both the cheaper models and my old bike, even some uphill climbs feel much flatter than they actually are. Yet the frame isn't so stiff you feel every single bump in the road like you would on a more expensive model.
This bike is fitted with a Shimano 105 gearset, which I am told is the choice of several professional teams. My personal experience is that it operates far more smoothly than the equipment fitted to the lower end models which I test rode, and unlike my old Peugeot, if necessary you can change up and down just as smoothly while still pedalling hard, without the need to back off to allow the chain to move onto the next sprocket. Another plus point here is the release lever which allows the chain to be dropped to the next sprocket runs the full length of the brake lever. Cheaper set ups seem to have only a little 'tab' on top of the brake lever casing which I found to be awkward to operate depending on your riding position.
This bike would have received five stars from me, only I feel there are better wheels that could have been fitted. The standard Shimano ones supplied are ok, although I've already had to re-true the rear one once, so they possibly aren't as top-notch as the other components. That said though, I don't think most riders experienced or not would necessarily feel the need to change them.

To summarise, if you're an experienced rider looking to upgrade to something faster and lighter but without the high price tag, this is an excellent choice.
If you're a beginner when it comes to road riding and was thinking of going for something at the lower end, I'd urge you to re-consider!.. It might cost a bit more, but the high spec components and general build quality means it really works out much better value for money, and should last you a fair while longer too!

I was looking for a road bike to attempt some triathlon this year. I wanted something I could train on easily enough, so no tri-bars etc, and could be used to commute to work.
The guys at Evans Woking showed me this, and after a test ride I was hooked. I have not ridden on roads regularly for 20 years, but this bike is stable and comfortable enough to give confidence, and it is quick. Aluminium is supposedly less forgiving, but maybe 20 years of riding has made me tougher but I could ride this all day. The 105 groupset makes it a reliable well-specced bit of kit too.
And this bike is entry level to the superb BMC range!

I've been shopping around for bikes around the £1000 price point with a Shimano 105 set up and this one made the grade. I discovered it by coincidence in an end-of-the-line sale at a local Evans Cycles shop, the assistant was very friendly and even searched the warehouse stock system to find the right size for me!

I'm tall at 6ft 4ins and ride a size L in this bike, but I am used to mountain bikes and like them a little smaller. An XL would also be fine but don't stress to much about which size, best advice would be to try one out.

I also considered a Focus Cayo bike from Wiggle and a Boardman Team bike from Halford, but I'm extremely satisfied with my Streetfire.

The ride is speedy, a bit twitchy but you get used to it and I've even forgot this now. there's no road vibration that I can feel, perhaps the unusually shaped square tubing helps eliminate this and the carbon forks.

I've got this bike in white and it looks gorgeous and a lot more expensive than it is. It isn't shockingly light, but still weighs less than my mountain bike which is of a similar price bracket.

Delivery was quick (ordered off the Internet) and I received a friendly call from the Evans to let me know it had arrived. When I picked it up it was already set up and they did me a deal on some pedals to go along with it (then fitted them for me).

This is one of the best bikes around at this price point, don't waste any more time procrastinating and buy it!

I was going to treat myself to a new bike in the spring of 2010 but when i saw this bike reduce to to a bag of sand in November 2009 I had to go a check it out. I didn't test ride it but I spent some time with it in store and fitted myself to the XL (I'm 6ft 4 and 1/2 inch tall). It remains relatively un-ridden but we have had a couple of dry sunny winter days so I have managed to get out on it for a good test.

Great frame for a taller rider, rigid and very light. As the other reviewers say it is responsive and just feels fast. The 105 components are reliable as we all know and the cont tyres are good rubber. In short you would find this hard to beat at this price bracket and in my opinion it is one of the best looking bikes around!
