Stylish, clean, functional and fun! The Charge Cooker Hi 2012 29er Mountain Bike features Tange Infinity chromo tubing, Rockshox XC28 forks and SRAM X5 gearing.

Charge Bikes specialise in uncomplicated yet functional bicycles and frames with a distinct and contemporary styling. Cool retro styling, and a great ride! Pros: Very cool retro styling with skinny tubes, one of the best looking 29er frames out there at this price range. I even like the retro inverted stem. It's a very good cruising mountain bike, due to weight and wheel size this is no whippet, but it cruises well and rides over a lot of obstacles. It's a smooth ride, great for XC and the odd bit or trail. The geometry means it has quite a high BB height espectially if you are used to a 26" wheel, which can take a bit of getting used to. I love the 2X10 drive train setup, I've never missed having 3 rings up front, and the weight saving and extra ground clearance is a bonus, and I have been impressed with the X5 gears all round so far. Cons: I'm not a fan of the Avid Elixir 1 brakes, they provide good stopping power but are not as consistent as higher priced alternatives. Also the pin that holds the pad in place is pretty poor, ideally there would be a screw as bending a hair pin everytime you want to replace a pad is not ideal and not possible with your hands. No QR on the seat post. Fork is average at this price, does an adequate job, but I think I have been spoilt by better forks in the past. There are a few components that can be upgraded to bring the weight down, rims would probably be my first choice. Overall this is a great bike, especially for the price. I've had some serious fun on this so far, and expect plenty more fun on it. It's a blast. February 22, 2013

Great classic looking bike I purchased this as my first 29er to add to my collection. I was looking for a sensible bike with reasonable spec and this hit the spot in the Evans sale. Arrived in a massive box almost ready to ride with a handy multi tool and pedal spanner (would have been nice if there were some pedals in the box?!) Fitted some egg beaters and off I went. Now the snow has cleared it will again be first choice out of the garage for a nice xc ride. January 31, 2013

Charge Cooker Hi (mid) 2012 I have been cycling for many years, but moved away from mountain biking in favour of road bikes until recently. Originally I purchased a relatively cheap Ridgeback Hybrid to see how I would get on, but swiftly discovered that although good on the road, it was less so off-road and almost completely useless if used in the forests. So, I went back to the drawing board, read a few reviews and started looking at the range of bikes available for under £1,000. Several friends recommended Pinnacle, Lapierre, Orange and Specialized. I took a look at a few different bikes and although I was drawn to the Specialized Rockhopper, I stumbled across the Charge Cooker by accident and was immediately impressed. For one thing it was a £1,000 bike, but it had been reduced (end of season / end of line) by 25% in Evan's store. It came equipped (at this price range) with excellent hardware (Rock Shok forks for example), plus it was a 29er. Again, speaking to friends there was some debate as to whether 26inch wheels or 29inch were best. I also read a few reviews with some bizarre comments regarding 29 being a fad (?). I was concerned that the wheels would be enormous and that it would look massive, but on picking up the bike I discovered that although the wheels indeed looked large, it was all good. The frame could be lighter (in fact this is my only real complaint), plus being a hard-tail it can be something of a shock on the butt once you bump down hard. Other than that, I am exceptionally happy! The design is retro, with the brown-wall Kenda tyres, which I hadn't seen on an MTB since the 80's. The handlebars also seemed really wide at first, but I got used to them within a few days. So how does it ride? Having walked (yes, walked) 6 miles to Evan's Cycle I was looking forward to cycling back. As mentioned, I was used to a Ridgeback (26) Hybrid and it was immediately apparent to me that I had a) made the right choice and b) that you really do get what you pay for. In this instance it was money very well spent. The lock-out feature on the Rock Shoks was ideal for cycling back along the road, and the gearing was very smooth, felt fluid on all the changes and I noticed a difference in the effort required, plus the additional speed I could get. This is apparently common to 29ers (an increase in speed). I then spent a rather frustrating week just cycling around town, through the park and backwards and forwards to work. What I really wanted was to go off-road and try it out. So, on probably the wettest and coldest day I could have chosen (my only day off) I eventually managed to go off-road in a forest along professionally set up tracks specifically designed for MTB... ...Blimey! The Charge Cooker Hi ate up the track and was incredibly good fun to ride. I felt that the larger wheel, plus the additional width of tyre rode out all the bumps and on a track that previously proved a challenge were easily surpassed. The Rock Shok (finally no longer locked) was very good and made things smoother. A couple of times the gears slipped a bit, but mainly due to my inexperience. I arrived home covered from head to toe in mud, the bike looked filthy and it was great fun. As an entry level bike for this sort of thing (lets face it, some people speed ££££'s on their bikes), I was really happy and feel that the bike represents very good value and is well equipped. Charge are a relatively new UK company (6th year?), and I think that it won't be long before they too are highly regarded in their field. So, whilst currently my friends are suggesting Pinnacle etc, they'll soon be adding Charge to their list of recommended manufacturers. Lastly, given that my mates are into their mountain biking, I asked them to try my bike out and even they were really impressed and felt it was a fantastic buy. So, all round exceptionally happy... Thanks Evans! P.S. Next trip out is to the mountain bike tracks on Arran... can't wait! December 8, 2012
