I've had this bike since May, I purchased from Evan's Nottingham branch. I'd agree with other reviewers in that the bike is a little on the expensive side for what you get - at it's full price it's competing with some pretty serious competition, however I think it's worth the upgrade from the standard galaxy, whereas the ultra is possibly worth the upgrade again if you have the money although I've not ridden it to confirm this - if just on spec for the Brooks, XT hubs and rear derailleur and lovely sugino chainset However if like me you already had a broken in Brooks saddle and are not flush with cash this is arguably the best value of the Galaxy's, as with a bit of research it should be possible to find a more sensible price Evans will match ( I got it for 1015)

Had one or two issues with the bike as it was presented to me, there was no 853 transfer on the seat tube (superficial but I thought could be an issue if I ever wanted to sell the bike) and the tubus rack was not installed (?!) - when I pointed this out the staff requested the transfer from Dawes and I had it in a few days and they installed the rack while I went for a coffee round the corner (maybe they could have paid for the coffee too but hey...) I have also never had an owners manual, but I have not requested one. Also a friend pointed out to me that I really should have at least had a pump thrown in (I guess as I had already got the price reduction so I was just happy with that) - these are all minor gripes really.

I have as mentioned made a couple of alterations - I've added a Brooks B17 saddle (the saddle this bike comes with I did not get on with but I know this is a very individual subject) I've also added cross levers and enjoy the fact that I can brake on the bar tops - especially useful when riding round towns and you want to be more upright. The machine built wheels were initially a bit of a mess in terms of their irregular spoke tension (I'm told this is a common problem with machined wheels) - but after a service at my lbs these are now much better, their was initially some brake squeal that I found hard to stop and gear cable tension had gone slack and less precise - but the service ironed these out too and now the brakes and gears are awesome. Basically the bike had a couple of minor issues which were sorted in 1st service - Evans would have offered a free service but I didn't take this up as I live a long way from the nearest Evans and it was just as economical in terms of travel cost to pay my lbs. Furthermore someone with more mechanical ability than myself could have easily done this themselves.

Two slight issues with my frame: The pump peg on the seat stay is positioned such that only a pump with a very short barrel will fit and the under down tube bottle bosses are too close to fit a standard small sized bike bottle and clear the mudguard. Again not major issues but mildy annoying.

Anyway it sounds as though I've only been listing gripes - but aside from this, the bike is an absolute pleasure to ride, unloaded it is responsive and suprisingly quick, and it has the ability to tackle heavy loads very comfortably, I haven't fitted a front rack yet but I plan to. I have a pair or ortlieb classic rollers for the rear and it easily copes with these being fully loaded plus tent on top. The gearing is such that you can still get up anything. The tyres are very puncture resistant, just one to the rear in over 1500 miles, and show very little signs of any wear yet. I've used it for short camping trips plus daily commuting in all weather and it copes with both of these jobs brilliantly so basically it does what it's supposed to do very well. Haven't tested it on a long tour yet, but I reckon it will be able to cope much better than me at the moment! I also like the looks of the bike.

Just returned from 1500km trip in the south of france - here's what happened:
This is a very fast tourer for the road.
My top speed - 68km an hour downhill, fully loaded with rear panniers, including camping gear - stable as anything.
Cruising the flat just over 30km an hour, and even making stead ascents on gently inclines at a good pace.
A heavy-ish bike, but able to take the loads, and very smooth to ride, loaded and unloaded - comfortable for the 80-100km a day (day after day) rider.
I climbed some serious midi-pyranees ascents on the lowest gears - no problem (just a lot of sweat).
I would get the rear spokes tweaked/tensioned (I checked this regularly at night, for better braking and stability at high speeds) - but with all the weight on the back, small amount of buckling was common when you hit a rock or hole, but easily fixed.
Handled Canal du midi (at a fair pace) but watch those tree roots - for that, you have to slow down, and if you're doing a fair bit of off-road, it could take slightly fatter tyres.
I Seldom used drop-down bars - mostly in head winds and cruising down hills... which was handy. Very comfy bars as they are.
All the running gear worked well - gears fine, breaks awesome, 2000km without a hitch.
A good commuter too - smooth, fast enough, and comfy - absorbing the bumps and ripples London roads.
Obviously can't be all things to all people - did get some toe-strike on front mud guard, but not so much when using cleats. No heel strike though, with my ortlieb classic rear panniers.
Also, the bar end caps fell out - a common problem with these bikes apparently - I lost them, but jammed a couple of wine bottle corks in there, they work a treat!
Also, not a 'nippy' bike (used to have a sirrus for around town - which I miss) - more a cruiser - but stripped back, probably a pretty good road bike. (I took a lot of day rides without my gear - a real pleasure to ride).
Another thing - I paid a little over £1000 for it, on Evan's 'price match' - so worth shopping around. I wouldn't pay the full 1500 I think they're asking...

A well made Touring bicycle built to last a life time. I have changed the saddle to Brooks B17 and fitted a pair of Altura Arran Panniers, It is now set up for some serious touring. I used the Galaxy for about a month now over a range of surfaces without any problems. So far I am very pleased with the bicycle.

I've had my Super Galaxy for nearly 30 years and despite the expense it has been probably one of the best purchases I have ever made. Because although I dont use it for touring or mega rides it has it has, allowed me to get some fresh air from the stresses of work, I use it for shopping (with decent panniers), I still think it looks fantastic and although bits need replacing every now and then still reliable. In other words a fantastic buy
