I've never see a rear light this bright!

Pros: Lightweight, Looks great, Good value, Good quality

I have recently started commuting into work on my cyclo-cross. Previously, I was using battery operated Cateye lights and although they did the job I wanted something much brighter to give me every possible chance of being seen on the road. My commute takes me on main roads, through a city, several towns and down country lanes.

As I already owned the Diablo front light I thought that it would be a sensible choice to simply extend the functionality of that front light. I ordered the Redeye through my local store. The delivery took longer than I thought, even though the item was in stock at the warehouse. Still, once it arrived I was surprised to see how small the unit was! It sits very flush with the seatpost which is great. Because of the size, the weight is minimal.

My bike is stored indoors and when I'm at work it's kept in a secure lock so I have no hesitation in leaving this light on my bike. However, at £36 you would want to take this light with you if you have to park up in the street. The light connects to the front light via the cable and wraps around the seatpost with velcro which is long enough for all styles of seatposts. I'm glad that I can keep the light on my bike as I have simply routed the cable along my bike frame with zip ties. If you didn't want to leave this light on your bike I could imagine the cable irritating you. If this is the case then I would suggest sticking with battery operated lights that don't have any cables.

I never leave my front light on my bike, so when I'm not using my lights I can very easily wrap the end of the cable around my front brake cables. It doesn't look too obvious that the cable is just hanging there. Also, with the weight and sleek appearance of the rear light, I'm more than happy to leave it on my bike all year round and going out without it in use. Here are my pro's and con's:

Pro's
:: Very well made. The unit looks sturdy and incredible well made. I've had this on my bike for a couple of months now and it still looks new.
:: Very compact and light. As mentioned above, the light sits very flush with the seatpost and it isn't heavy. I have no idea it's on my bike.
:: Amazingly bright. When I first turned this light on I couldn't believe how bright it was - I was taken aback! For such a small unit I've never seen another light that is brighter. I have a re-assuring red glow that lights up the rear wheel and ground behind me.
:: Safe. I'm not sure if it's just me, but when I have this light on at night, I find drivers giving me a bit more room and not sitting too close behind me. Even if that's just me imaging things, I certainly feel a lot safer, knowing that it'll be very hard for a driver to miss me.
:: Battery life. I haven't found the battery life of my Diablo impacted by the use of this rear light. To give you an idea of the minimal power it requires, I left the lights running at home and even when the front light ran out, the rear light kept going.
:: Easy to clean. I can clean the light easily whilst it is attached to my bike. It is certainly waterproof!!

Con's
:: The cable. I can imagine this being annoying for anyone who can't leave the light on their bike. I'm fortunate as it's not a problem for me to leave the light on my bike and secure the cable in place with zip ties.
:: Only one function. It would be great if you could also choose a flashing mode. The light only has one function, constant.
:: Turning the light on is a little quirky. I have the hang of it now so it's no longer a problem but I thought I'd mention it. It basically works off the front light, it doesn't have it's own button.
:: The price. Personally I'm happy with the price, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the light, but I can see this affecting the decisions of some. However, to try and justify things, when I used my Cateye lights, I used a couple of lights at the same time, had to keep buying batteries and never matched the power output of this light. Therefore, I think that £36 is well spent as I no longer have to worry about spare batteries in my bag or using multiple lights.

Overall, I'm completely happy with this purchase and I'm looking forward to using this light in the winter. I'm confident that I will still be visible in rain, fog and so much more!

This is a real must if you have the the exposure front lamp. The light intensity to the rear is extremely bright, and makes me feel really safe on dark county lanes (commute 7 miles). The light is brighter than my 1000cc motorcycle, and uses minimum power. Makes the flashing led light above it (battery operated) look pathetic. fully recommended!

Hardly a discreet red light

Yes, I recommend this product.

Pros: Lightweight, Good quality, incredibly bright

Cons: Expensive, poor fastening, no flashing option

When this arrived I was surprised at the size of the light, it is barely wider than the seat post. Despite its size it throws out an incredible amount of red light. My rear wheel, the reflective strips and the road behind me are illuminated in a comforting red glow.

Beautifully made, it has so far coped with dense fog, rain, snow, sleet and mud. Both the casing and the light have performed perfectly. I've even used it on days when the sun is bright but low. Drivers seem to give me more room and I now rarely get cars sitting on my tail.

The small size of the light and the lack of a flash function is a disappointment, I tend to partner it with a flasher (Cateye 1100) for night rides on local A roads. I run the light directly off a single cell Exposure piggy back battery, with the battery in my saddle bag. The battery life between recharges is approx 4-6 hours.

The velcro fastening for the light works reasonably well but I've used a cable tie for backup.

Overall: If the battery was integrated into the light, the velcro was replaced with a bracket and a flasher option provided this would be the perfect rear light.
