Smaller unit size reduces weight (it is half the weight of the Edge 705) and pares down the navigation tools to focus on GPS assisted training data. Ability to follow uploaded courses. Completely wireless operation, making installation easy. Uses a high-sensitivity SiRF GPS receiver to track your movements. The large screen can be backlit at night for easy viewing, and customised to show the data you want. Waterproof to IPX7 standard (up to 1 metre for 30 minutes) Uses a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, providing up to 15 hours operation. I purchased the Edge 500 after my Polar started giving up the ghost and I'm very happy with this device after just a few weeks of ownership. It looks like it is built to last and has many useful features such as USB charging and configurable displays. It always reliably pairs up with the ANT+ Cadence sensor and HR monitor and reminds me if I have started moving without starting the ride on the device. My Polar would sometimes give unusual HR readings (220 bpm!) when passing near overhead lines - the Garmin doesn't seem to be affected by this. I also like having the speed sensor on the rear wheel as it allows me to obtain a speed/distance reading whilst using the bike on a turbo trainer. In terms of features this model looks to have the best overall compromise between functionality and price. Highly recommended.

My second Garmin Cycle Computor

Yes, I recommend this product.

Pros: Good value, Good quality, Lightweight

I have a Garmin Edge 705 with mapping capability and have realy enjoyed using that on MTB excurtions into the more remote areas of New Zealand. It has been totaly reliable and the features are exactly what I need. But for less adventurous riding especialy on the road bike, I wanted something with less bulk and weight so I got the Edge 500. It does not have mapping capability but otherwise has many of the same features as the 750. In adition it has temp. and a few others that make it the ideal unit for a light weight road bike.

Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Lightweight, Looks great, great tool when used with a turbo trainer

Cons: Expensive, why is the red one more expensive

I wanted one of these for a long time so my fiancée got me a red one for Christmas (to match my kit) its really easy to connect to the bike and the speed and cadence sensor was also a piece of cake the computer even sets the tyre size when you ride your bike outside using GPS.
the premium heart rate monitor is really comfortable unlike my old one its also never dropped out after 8hrs plus of riding. Its also came in really handy on the turbo trainer as i now have a measure of what speed and distance i'm covering while on there. the garmin connect web site is an added bonus i found it really interesting and easy to use
the only reason this only gets four stars is because of the high price and i've only owned it just over a month
