FIddly and annoying General design flaw with the brake unit (Hayes 9's) themselves where the small hose pops off the valve very easily as your hand causes slight movement squeezing the bottle. As well as causing fluid to go everywhere (I highly advise wearing safety glasses and gloves for this one) and introducing air to the system this also slowly stretches the end of the hose requiring you to snip it off until eventually you have very little hose left (it only comes with a small amount). It's very hard to apply sufficient pressure with the squeezy bottle and is quite fatiguing even with very strong hands. Instead of following the instructions I recommend buying this kit and a 50-100ml plastic syringe and using the system someone has demonstrated in the link for less faff and better results. Does the job but the fluid is all you need to buy I used this to bleed an HFX-9 system front and back so I can't comment on it's others uses. I found that the tube which goes over the bleed nipple on the caliper comes off very easily because the tube is made of a stiff plastic. The tube supplied isn't very long which makes collecting fluid from the tube at the lever end more difficult than it needs to be. This is the official Hayes bleed kit and does the job, but if I had the choice now I'd just buy the fluid then use some soft tubing found at most hardware shops. The metal fitting that goes in the lever doesn't have to be the official Hayes fitting, I found that an empty mechanical pencil pushed into the hole in the lever works fine. There's plenty of fluid supplied and was enough to bleed the front and back brakes a couple of times each. July 11, 2012
