Welcome to the Just Right world of the Jamis Aurora 2012 Touring Bike, the road bike for smart urban speedsters and cyclo-tourists. This year’s rides are simply better and lighter- Aurora makes use of a long-cage road derailleur for supersmooth shifting and the uphill hauling capability of a super-low 26×28 gear commanded by travel-friendly bar-end shifters and sports new full-coverage/fully adjustable fenders.

Jamis Aurora 2012 Touring Bike 3 5 2 2

An excellent traditional steel framed tourer This is an excellent option for anyone looking for a traditional steel framed tourer for under a £1000, especially if you are a taller rider as the Aurora comes with a 62cm frame option. Handling is the bikes greatest strength with a lively but predictable and relaxed ride. The transmission, although a mix of component makes and grades, works well enough, the bar end shifters being a sensible choice for a bike at this price point.; the cantilever brakes are also a practical option, providing more than adequate stopping power. Particularly impressive is the inclusion of 175mm cranks and wide bars in the larger frame sizes. The bike is finished with full length alloy mudguards and rack painted to match the frame. Whilst this may be to everyone's taste I like the overall finish which gives the bike a very understated appearance. Top quality Vittoria Randonneur 32mm tyres provide a great compromise between performance and comfort. Only time will tell how well the Alex Ace 19 wheels will stand up to serious touring but for now the 36 hole rims are staying in true. Touring bikes aren't cheap and at the current sale price of £699 the Aurora represents something of a bargain, especially for the taller rider. Not recommended. Very poor I've had this bike for two months now ad I have had a number of problems with it. 1. The gears are terrible. I had the entire system replaced after one month as they virtually fell off the bike and now one month later, they look to be going the same way again. The excuse the first time was that there was a 10-speed changer and only a 9-speed cassette. Anyway, the gears are rubbish. You have to change two gears at a time in order to get a response and sometimes during a flat when you think you've changed gear, a horrible stutter and clang happen when you think you're about to rip the chain off of the bike when the gears change at completely random intervals. The bike also makes a lovely clicking sound which keeps me company on the 13-miles I have to ride into work each day so no need to put your headphones in. 2. Poor build quality Whether this was a Jamis fault or an Evans oversight I dont know but I wasn't impressed when 5-minutes into my first ride away from the Evans store I had three bolts fall off into the road - resulting into a lost reflector and a very shaky mud guard. The loss of material from the bike continued until I gave it a thorough check after a couple of days of riding into work. 3. Brakes Underwhelmed by the quality and effectiveness. This was the first 'proper' bike that I bought and I thoroughly wish I had chosen a different bike but at £800 you hope to be getting something significantly better than the product I did. I'd either recommend buying a scooter or investing in a bike that has been extensively tested and has a lot of positive reviews. On a positive note, I was told by a cyclist that I had a good bike because it looks awful so therefore it is less likely to be stolen! Brilliant. March 12, 2012
