Really nice bike i've commuted into work a few times now and I'm really pleased with the bike. The components are good and the finish is nice. I'm not so sure about the bar end shifters though and the way that they work - push down to go up. However overall I'm chuffed. September 2, 2012

Comfortable light tourer, good frame and brakes. I bought this to replace my ancient Dawes Super Galaxy, and tried several other tourers before choosing the Aurora Elite with 62cm frame. Initially I found the riding position a bit too aggressive, but reversing the stem was easy and brought the handlebar height up to a more relaxed position. I agonised over the the pros and cons of disc brakes vs cantis for weeks – the Aurora Elite only has discs. Having owned the bike for several weeks now, all I can say is that disc brakes are *so* much better in every way that I will never go back to rim brakes. Yes, they do weigh slightly more, but they also stop you very convincingly – you particularly notice this in the rain. Adjustment is not as easy as with cantis, but I think that is because they work differently and I am just not that familiar yet. One thing to look out for, if you have size 11 or bigger feet, your left ankle will be quite close to the mounting of the rear disc brake (which unlike on a MTB is mounted inside the frame to leave room for the rack). This worried me for a while but has never been a problem, and wearing proper cycling shoes (i.e. with a cut-down heel) gives you much more clearance. Many reviews mentioned that the Aurora Elite is slightly on the heavy side but I would say it is light (for a tourer). It is noticeably lighter than my Super Galaxy and my town bike (a good Ridgeback alu frame). The most important thing (which I noticed on my first test ride) is that it has a really compliant comfortable ride – definitely a good frame, and probably the thing that made me go for it over other bikes I tried. I was a bit worried about having so many gears (30, against 10 on my Super Galaxy!) but the gear changing is very slick and quick and with so many gears at the back you don’t have to change on the front so often. The bar-end shifters take some getting used to, but I really like the fact that the front-changer is not fixed in 3 positions but can be varied, so you don’t have to let the chain rub in the more extreme gear positions. My only criticism is that for a touring bike the low-range gears are too high. I’ve had to get off and walk on steep climbs a few times and that is without anything loaded on the bike – I don’t think it is just my lack of fitness, the gearing really isn’t low enough. At the other end of the scale, the mid and high gears are great, and I’ve noticed that I travel a couple of mph faster on this bike than I expected to, it’s not a racer but it certainly goes if you want to. It wasn’t love at first sight, but as I get used to it, it is turning out to be a very good bike, and at the Evans sale price also good value. July 2, 2012

Very comfortable ride, nice responsive bike This bike pretends to be gloss black, but when you get it out in sunshine it is a beautiful deep metallic green. The gunmetal 105 front chainset is very nice, and once adjusted (no thanks to Evans for their initial setup) the gears work well from the bar-end shifters. The on-cable adjusters for brakes and gears that sit just in front of the handlebars are great for fine adjustments. The painting extends to the mudguards (classy) and also the rear rack - just plain stupid. I've clipped pannier bags onto it twice so far and the paint on the rack is already scuffed - this realy should have been black anodised and NOT painted. The gearing range is excellent and the disc brakes certainly allow more braking force than anything else I've had on a road bike. Adjusting them correctly is pretty tricky (again no thanks to Evans for initial very poor setup) but look on Youtube under BB7 setup. Altogether a very nice bike, looks fantastic and very pleasant to ride. March 4, 2012
