Cons: seat

I've changed my Specialized Sirrus Sport for this one, and what a nice surprise it was.
its light, fast and cheerful. Not like my old gray ,sad bicycle.
My concern is the seat, which is not the comfiest, on the other hand it looks cool and I'm pretty sure nobody will nick it cos it will look silly on any other bike. Time will show:)
Highly recommended.

Lovely little fixie

This was my first fixie after having spent years riding hybrids. The flip-flop hub made it a great choice for me because I wasn't sure if I'd get on with it as a fixie so I wanted single speed as a fallback. Turns out I needn't have worried! I love the fixed gear.

It rolls wonderfully, it actually feels like less effort than my old bike. I don't have the same range and it definitely gives me a better workout than my hybrid but while I'm riding it just feels so smoothy and easy that even on fairly steep hills it just seems to glide so nicely that it's easy just to keep on peddling. Pretty much exactly what I wanted, something to make those short little rides into town a bit more fun and a bit better exercise.

It is also a very pretty little bike. I went for the black and white model and the first time I took it out in a group some guy I'd never met before complimented me on how nice it looked. That sure never happened with my old hybrid! :)

Everything seems pretty robust and good quality but I've only had it a few weeks, I guess I'll see after a couple of years riding it.

It feels pretty light to me but then moving form a hybrid that is perhaps to be expected. I think it's fairly average for a fixie but that seems pretty lightweight to me!

The supplied break levers are the type such that they can be fitted in line with another set so with a little bit of know-how you can fit extra break levers on the ends of the bullhorns and have levers for both riding positions.

It has fixings for a rack and mudguards if you want to turn it into a more practical commuting machine rather than being another fixie fashion victim. ;)

Just a couple of little faults that keep it from being five star: -

The metal clips that keep the rear break cable in place make it hard to fit the top tube jacket. I didn't bother with the jacket the end, I think it looks better without it but since it is provided it should fit better.

The bar bike in general is very comfortable but the bar tape that it comes fitted with really isn't! I replaced it almost immediately with some Easton cork tape and it is so much more comfortable now.

Cons: calculating the jump to light speed

I thought I would leave this review until I had done 1000miles on it

54cm Black and white version.
The picture is a little misleading as its over exposed, The bike frame is black with light grey vinyl and light grey tape on the handle bars, the wheel rims are white and unpainted where the breaks will hit the rim. I though this was a lovely detail. The spokes are also painted black. The peddles have cages and straps that can be removed.

Gearing: It requires very little effort to ride up 10-15% hills on steeper hill you just stand up and take it slowly. However I've been riding a 17kg bike for a few years now so my experience is bias You can keep a good speed on flats and you'll be constantly irritated by how slow people are and why they cycling in such an easy gear.

I went fixed gear after 200miles which takes a few rides to get used to but you really become one with the bike and I wouldn't go back now. However I couldn't for the life of me get my feet into the cages after I start moving so I opted for spd pedals in the end. Signalling and wanting to free wheel going over speed bumps is one of the biggest hazards when you first start fixed gear. You eventually learn to just stand up going over things and your balance improves quite dramatically. Braking is much more responsive in fixed gear

The chain tends to lose tension after a month or so. But it takes 5 minutes to fix.
Frame: this bike is just under 10kg at 54cm and I was impressed because I barely break a sweat on my commute and pass most cyclist with ease, The welding is tight and paint is of a very good standard i've started to notice some rubbing where the brake cable moves backwards and forwards near the head set but meh its a small issue. Most of the fixings are Alan key and are inset within the frame leaving it with a flush look. My flat mate is seriously considering one of these bikes for the purest look alone and level of detailing. Thank you Evan cycles for the tool kit that came with the bike.

Wheels: bi-directional and deepish profile, the 28 width is useful when the roads are potholed after this winter. The white rims and unpainted strip running along them looks great and the paint makes both the spokes and rim a little easier to clean I've read a number of bad reviews about alexrims used on the bike. I've yet to see any of the problems occur. I haven't noticed any wobble in the rim so far either which is nice. I've had one puncher [thorn] and the speed of repair was nice. Be careful in wet weather you just slide, but this is a common problem with road bikes.
after all these miles the tread is still fine, although I don't skid much.

Brakes: simple cantilever that means I changed a puncher in 20mins. When I think that it used to take me hours to realign the brakes and gears on my last bike,its a great advantage. The wheels lock if you pull hard enough, so they work and so far after 1000miles I haven't had to change the blocks

The break leavers are also minimal and its nice seeing the mechanics of them whilst breaking. Putting it on fixie actually aids with breaking as you can push down on the peddle to help stop, just make sure you have the straps on. Because the breaks are metal you can use them to warn pedestrians by hmm its hard to explain you just ping the leavers if you let them return to the open position by releasing them quickly .... you'll be riding a bike that makes hardly any sound

Handlebars: I use the bull bars all the time now as its more comfortable, I may upgrade the leavers to ones that sit at the end of the horns because of this but the distance between the horns and brake leavers is not a problem because of the bars width. The tape has lasted and is easy to clean using muck off in my case, feels good and due to the colour doesn't look grubby. Adding lights to the handle bars is a little tricky as there isn't much space between the breaks and the headset. So getting a lights fixture not to hit the brake cables as they move took a while to get right. You will only be able to fit so much on the handlebars which is possibly a bad point if your obsessed with how far you've gone. The sleek look starts to disappear once you add things to it.

Seat: If you have the seat positioned correctly its comfortable, although seat comfort varies from person to person, I have a fantastic bum, but enough about me, we're talking saddles here. The stitching is good and should last a while. Its not the lightest but i'm not doing time trials. I actually found the bottle opener under the seat irritating as it made fixing my under seat tool pack very difficult because it sits where the mountings should go. Its a nice idea and optimises the names given to SE's bikes but allowing it to be removable would be great for future seats.

Overall its a fantastic first fixed gear bike, its very responsive in terms of breaking, peddling, the width of the handlebars as well make turning very quick. Plus all those extra details made me wet. :) I like this bike and hope I never have to replace it.

The only problem with this bike is making the calculations to light speed....

Got the 2009 version of this bike last week. It's light, looks good and will turn heads. Swap the saddle out though as it's not the best.
