Best Value Big Travel Bike

After much researching, I settled on the Big Hit 2 as the right bike for my riding and budget. 11 months later, I know I made the right choice.

Mainly I ride downhill and the odd jump or two. This really isn't the bike for riding uphill - I doubt anyone thought it would be - but it can be done, as long as the going is not too steep.

The main strengths of the bike are the way it rides and the fantastic spec for the money.

Big bumps are absorbed with ease - you'll find yourself riding over what you would previously have ridden round, the componants have the strength to survive the resultant battering over tree-stumps and boulders. Small, fast bumps are not handled quite as well as one-off big bumps, but not so as to cause concern. The bike gives you confidence straight away - once you point it downhill, it's ready to go as fast as you're willing to let it.

The spec features a few highlights for the price range, and with own-brand products filling in in areas where you can't go too far wrong (stem, bars, seatpost) or items riders are likely to change anyway (the pedals). The one weak point I have encountered so far is the chain device. The device seemed fine to begin with, but once it dropped the chain once, it seemed to happen again and again. I also changed the pedals, as they were just plain slippery. I would also point out the benefit in spending the extra £200 on this model, rather than the Big Hit 1. For that, you get better forks, rear shock and derailleur - key componants that would be costly to upgrade later. I test rode the Big Hit 1 and the difference in the smoothness and solid feel of the forks is particularly noticeable. The forks on the BH 1 almost put me off the bike completely to be honest.

Overall this is a great bike for thundering down hills and flinging over jumps. It represents very good value for money and has surpassed my expectations. Good job from Specialized. Realistically, I'd give it 4.5 out of 5, but no half marks here and it is closer to a 5 than a 4.

If you want a budget downhill / freeride bike, look no further. The componentry on this bike is the best on a sub £2000 bike. The Bike also looks amazing although i know it is not to everyones taste. This bike can take huge hits with ease and the suspention is perfect. The rear shock may lack adjustability but it has been custom tuned by specialized and becuase it is so simple it wont go wrong. You will break before this does. A very good bike for the money, you wont look back.

Great value for money. I looked at loads of bikes in this range and this had the best spec for the money. I was a little concered about the lack of adjustment with the suspension as I'm 13st but I've taken it off 6-8 foot drops and it's not bottomed out once. The bike feels responsive and gives you loads of confidence to go faster and bigger. The bike does not feel like a 35lb+ bike at all and is agile in the corners. I've ridden a friends Kona colier and Scott but the riding position seems unstable. The only bad point I can make is the brakes but you can't get everything for £1500.

I've only had this bike for a week but feel so at home on it. The suspension both front and rear dont let you down on the big drops although a bit more adjustiblity would be benificial as there is only rebound adjustment. Not the lightest freeride bike out there but you can tell it's built to last. The graphics are "different" as is the brown saddle and grips that come with it but I didn't buy this bike for it's looks. The frame is noticibly flexier than my chromo hardtail but doesn't hinder it at all only adding to the feel of the ride. My frame came with some important welding missing at the shock gusset on the down tube but I hope this will be remedied and I'm sure is an isolated case. The crankset could be better (Raceface Ride D/H for example) and the Sram shifter is questionable in comparison to the rest of the componentry for the price. The chainguide isn't the easist to adjust either as you have to remove the crank to get into the upper guide bolts and mine came incorrectly fitted. In all, another good product from Specialized that I hope can live up to it's name.
