Pros: Good value, Good quality, Lightweight

The rockhopper frame's been around for a while, with one or 2 tweaks over the years. The frame itself is solid, lightweight for the price point and over the last year has taken a number of knocks but keeps soldiering on (I'm still relatively new at this and I've crashed this bike enough times at varying speeds). If the price is bothering you, go into a store and compare the weight of this bike to that of a bike half the price and you'll notice a big difference - bear in mind you need to climb the bike up a number of hills.

The 'comp' version of the bike comes with the Rockshox Tora fork- lighter and more responsive than the fork on the standard 2009 model - soaks up a number of bumps on trails full of loose rocks and roots. The fork and frame really do make a difference to the way your ride handles so it's worth getting something decent for your first bike.

'Contact points' (saddle, pedals, handlebar) are generally well done but I can see a number of people upgrading them. The saddle's pretty comfortable compared to a number of stock saddles. The pedals, whilst not terrible, are metal and a bit spiky so they do have the potential to draw blood if they swing round and catch you in the front of the lower legs. Most people will upgrade these to either platform or clipless pedals. Handlebar grips are functional but quite thin and afer I'd been squeezing on them for a few hours without padded gloves, crampy pains in my palms ensued. Thicker or more padded grips would have been appreciated.

As for the rest of the kit, it's pretty well done with Deore components, decent shifters and disc brakes. This stuff generally looks after itself as long as you lube the chain every few rides. After a yr, I was swearing at the front shifter and deraileur as it'd slipped out of alignment making front gear changes dodgy. It was more due to regular wear and tear rather than bike build and after a few hrs of head scratching, I managed to take it apart and put it back together.

Anyway. A yr on, the bike's still running strong. It's a comfortable ride which is pretty nippy when it needs to be. The frame's a bit scratched up after a multitude of falls, but none of the parts have failed after over 500 miles of rough terrain (a couple of puntures non-withstanding). The bike in general's an all rounder. There's even a quick release lever on the seatpost so you can drop the seat for a few jumps if you want to (the fork can take it - don't worry). This spec's ideal for a first bike in terms of price v performance (though rockhopper prices have gone up again for 2010 and probably will go up again for 2011), and the frame's an ideal platform to upgrade in a few years time as the other parts wear out.

Whatever bike you choose - find a bike that fits, and factor in the cost of helmet, and gloves. Then just get out there and enjoy the experience.

Im one from the last International lucky customers for this bike before Evans forbid the shipments outside the UK. I had this bike for a year now. I most use it for commuting and road rides. I know thats its not correct for this kind of bike but this is my use. I have tryied it in the mud and some forrest paths in some weekends which i say has a good handling. I like the Rock Shox forks and the lockout ability which they have. I also find the Avid breaks excellent for my purposes. The selle was ok. And the Shimano's keep working flawlessly. Overall after about 2500km's i said that everything is as it should be for a Specy. Very Good. The only con that i have seen is that the rear wheel needs truing from time to time even on road use. Maybe the Alex rims are kind of soft. So i have upgraded them with a MAVIC wheelset for piece of mind. Recommended from me.
