Lightweight A1 Premium Aluminium double butted frame with freeroad geometry is disc-compatible and features internal cable routing for low maintenance performance in any conditions. Lightweight alloy fork is ultra-durable and disc-ready, while the lowrider rack and mudguard mounts allow you to keep the water off and the load well-balanced. This disc-specific alloy wheelset is built for wider tyres assuring a solid tyre stance for rough roads or off-road. Specialized Borough CX tyres with Armadillo Elite protection have a wide and smooth centre section that rolls fast on paved or dirt roads and side knobs for off-road use. Adjustable 4-position oversized alloy stem with 31.8mm bar clamp for strength and versatile positioning. New H2 Ergo alloy bar offers serious performance and ergonomic positioning. Amazing bike, highly recommend the acquisition! Have been travelling to and from work for the last 3 years, 20 miles collectively down a canal on my Felt Q920 with semi slicks. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't use my road bike as the wheels wouldn't last. After 5500 miles on the MB, I decided to have a good look around and discovered the Specialized Tricross Elite Disc. Tried it out, and I haven't looked back. The bike is awesome! You can treat it like a mountain bike, but get the speeds of a road bike (and sweat less due to the reduction in weight!). Totally blown away at just how good an idea it is to combine the two types of bike into one, and this bike provides a fine example of how successful bringing the two together can be. If you fancy a liberting change to your ride, then this is your best choice! July 27, 2012

Jack of All Trades, or Master? According to The Velominati, who are the keepers of the cog and the guiding lights of cycling, the correct number of bikes you should own is N+1 (where N is the number of bikes you actually currently possess). Unfortunately, this can be a bit of a problem for us mere mortals who have wives, lives and cashflow issues. Which is probably why we've seen the rise in popularity over the years of hybrids, "fast commuter bikes and latterly, soft crossers (i.e. cyclocross bikes that won't ever see a cross track in their lives and which have mudguard clearance and stuff like that). So, all of this I knew when I started looking around for a "winter" bike last year. My wife derided me viciously: "Winter bike?! You've got enough bikes ... etc., etc." So, my having explained the principles of cycling to her yet again, she relented microscopically after I assured her that I could get a "winter" bike that I could happily press into service for a number of duties throughout the year ... Naturally, being a road cyclist, I drifted towards the soft crosser option above. I looked at all of the offerings from other manufacturers, yes all of them, and finally settled on the big "S" and this Tricross Elite Disc. And I've not regretted it one bit. In terms of the bike, Evans have put a thoroughly decent spec list up on this site, you can look up all the kit it has. And I'd recommend Evans wholeheartedly as a supplier too, fantastic advice and service as always from them. Proper bike people, Evans. I'll tell you how it is to own and ride. First Impresssions I have to say, it looks sublime. For a big old lump it has fabulous lines and Spesh have given this Elite a Matt Charcoal finish with tiny bits of Gold dotted around it, like head spacer, skewers, braze on allen bolts, etc. Black bar tape and black saddle and seat post. It looks fast. Speed Machine? It isn't actually. Well not with the Borough CX Armadillo tyres fitted as standard, it isn't. I hate it when people say tyres "roll well enough" (are you listening cycling journos?) they're round, of course they roll well. What I'd like to see is some kind of measurement for it. Anyway, these CX's are fine for what they are and they feel absolutely bulletproof in terms of punctures so far. I've ridden over the worst of Somerset's back lanes and farmers' detritus with them and they've handled it admirably. Tow paths, singletrack and grass are all handled with ease. It's just that they're a bit slow on the road. And that's fine, because if you're going to ride this bike solely on road, you'll no doubt fit some 23's and get those 3 or 4 kph you're missing straight back. Ride and Handling You'll want to ride this bike on the road too. It's so comfortable but at the same time it's poised and feels sporty. There is a bit of swing at the bottom bracket when you stamp on the pedals but it's not enough to make the bike feel anything less than surefooted and planted. That bit of compliance is actually very welcome. The fork is aluminium (and that's a good thing, as you'll see in a minute) so it does transmit a bit of road buzz but I've found the bike so comfortable I can change my hand position at will and easily ride for another half hour without changing again, even on the drops. Components Components are Shimano Tiagra. And this bike has a secret weapon: it's a triple! You can twiddle up hill using a 30/30 front/back gear if you so wish. You do wonder though why Shimano didn't make the inner ring a bit smaller though, say a 26? Hey ho. Tiagra is slick shifting (smoother, I reckon, than 105) and you're never short of a ratio with 30 of them to choose from. The downshift lever does feel a bit plasticky but I'm happy to live with that. Braking is handled by Avid BB5's and here is my main beef with this bike. Why not BB7's? However, once they're set up, I've found the BB5's stop the bike fantastically well. More importantly, you can feather off speed on fast descents with a light one finger on the rear such is the modulation with Avid mechanical discs. Finally on components, the wheels are pure stealth. They're Alex black rims with black spokes and no branding at all. Sexy lexy! In terms of performance, I have to say that they don't give you the most help in terms of zipping up hill but they more than make up for that by the way they shrug off potholes and other road imperfections. Practicality One of the things about soft crossers as do-it-all bikes is that they can do just that: all. This bike though represents the thought that Spesh has put into it. Not content with mudguard eyelets, rear rack mounts, two bottle braze ons and fully enclosed cabling this bike also has front low rider mounts (hence why the ally fork is a good thing) now, you can consider this bike as a genuine alternative to your Dawes Galaxy. And let's see your Dawes handle the terrain this thing can. So, should you? Well, in a nutshell this is a superb machine that can and will do everything you want it to. It doesn't look out of place turning up on a Sunday morning with the roadies for a club run, it'll handle a sportive (if you change those tyres), the local singletrack is meat and two veg to its frame and components, and if you load it up to the gunwales whole continents are yours to conquer. If it had Avid BB7's instead of the 5's and a slightly comfier saddle this bike would have a resounding five stars. If I could give it four and a half, I would have. Nice machine Specialized. Bike flights! Fantastic ride! Picked up after 4 weeks of waiting (out of stock and my holidays). Cycled from Nottingham to Derby - aprox 24 miles in around an hour with few stops to adjust geometry. Bike is extremely fast (before I rode MTBs for whole my life). Rolls smoothly and effortless. I am 196cm and bought a 61cm frame. This was the best fit frame for my size (compared with Genesis and CBoardman). It needs time to get used to different riding position, but hoping to adjust everything in the next few days. Today I cycled to work and I had big grin all the way.... May 28, 2012
