First serious road bike - A HIT !

Yes, I recommend this product.

Pros: Good value, Good quality, Comfortable, Lightweight, Looks great, wsd tweaks aid fit

Cons: over long cranks ?

The 2010 model’s appearance, predominantly gloss black with pale green and white contrasts is a mean & moody ensemble when compared with the more pastel based frameset of the 2009 model. This was certainly more appealing to my active “tomboy” 11 yr old (132cm, 30Kg).
As her first road bike, I was pleased to find the 47cm 700c version was applicable rather than having to compromise tyre and tube choices with the smaller 43cm 650c option. Furthermore, it gives a huge amount of room to grow with a prodigious seat pin which coupled with a longer stem will enable appropriate positioning lasting into full grown adulthood (I expect her final height to be around 158cm). Unlike many of its emerging competitors, the Trek has eyes for mudguards both front and back and two neat bosses for a lightweight rack atop the seat stays should touring be on your agenda. Wheel / frame clearances remain tight enough though and don’t look “gappy” in the absence of mudguards.

First comments after riding were on a great “high position” vs her previous hybrid bike. A short reach forward via WSD bars and a tight effective top tube length gives good positioning even with the seat pin at minimal extension. Although a small degree of front wheel / shoe overlap is present on this size, it could perhaps be avoidable through use of a shorter crankset. Perhaps an area where saving money dictated a compromise?
The high pressures “roll really well”, predictably I know, but it’s a big transition from fat tyre comfort to gliding along feeling every errant pebble on the road.
The gearing range appears right (in spite of full length 170mm cranks), although yet to be tested on a steep grade, gear shifts were reported very effective, Shimano set up and design functional as ever.
Budget platform pedals & straps are a good learning intermediate prior to switching to clipless in a couple of hundred miles time. One other comment was that the saddle might need changing, but as such, these are highly user specific items. All in all, the money has been spent in the right areas (frame, wheels, gruppo) and saved in the easily upgraded areas, making a highly appropriate all round machine with excellent projected longevity.
