Bought this bike in march 2011 in the sale, and can't believe the ride.
I used to ride a racing bike in my teens, and now I am nearly 40 I thought I would return to some regular cycling to help keep in shape. I had a road bike in mind and went to my local evans cycle store. The sales assistant really new his stuff and i came away feeling satisfied with the advise I had been given and bought the bike on the evans website and collected it from the store that weekend...could not fault the service. excellent from start to finish

I have now been riding the bike most weekends and have also signed up to do a few bike events this summer. its an outstanding cycle, very fast, light, comfortable and responsive, took a few miles to get used to it on my first trip out, as i had forgotton how responsive a road bike is, but now six weeks down the line, i would not have anything else.... a good alround road bike with loads of extras for the money.

I bought this bike for the purpose of riding from John O'Groats to Land End and for the foreseeable aftermath - although I have only been using it for training rides, its been brilliant.

Gear changes are smooth and you are able to change them easily from either upright or in the drops, so no problems there. I have found recently that some high gears cause the chain to catch causing the characteristic 'clickclickclick' sound - I am putting this down to a bit of stretch in a new gear cable and will just tighten it up a fraction to sort it out.

Bike looks great and is able to accommodate a rear pannier rack and mudguards so no problems there.

The seat is comfortable and I've only had an uncomfortable mile when I was on it without my cycling shorts (and this was about 10 miles in). However, I am looking at replacing it with a gel filled/coated saddle for the 1100 mile trip this summer.

Riding in the drops took a few tens of miles to get used to - at first I ended up getting a bit of back ache but that soon sorted itself out.

One small gripe is that when nor in the drops (i.e. hands resting on the horizontal bars) the brake leavers are a touch awkward to get a pull hard (due to shorter leaver length).

Another with regard to the 53cm model; you can't fit a Kryptonite E/Z mount with medium sized lock inside the frame - so you either have to mount it so it protrudes out slightly or sling the lock in a pannier.

I too bought the Pilot as my first foray into drop bar cycling. I wanted a versatile, fast bike, with a riding position that wasn’t too aggressive as 80% of my cycling is urban commuting.

I test rode a LOT of bikes before I chose this one, and was actually close to buying a Specialized Tricross, however the deal on this bike was too good to turn down.

Like a cross bike I liked the slightly higher position of the handlebars, rack braze-ons and the ability to just squeeze a set of guards in. The reason for choosing the Pilot over a cross bike was that the ride was that bit racier, faster, a lot more responsive, not to mention better groupset and lighter weight. Filtering through traffic on the hoods gives perfect visibility. The carbon fork and seat post combo absorbs road hum really well, and the 25mm tyres are surprisingly stable.

Since buying the bike I’ve done a couple of hundred miles on it commuting across South London. Evans had to replace a brake calliper which was broken, and fair play to them, they gave me a far superior part. The thing I have noticed the most about the switch to a road bike is how terrible the stopping power is compared to my disc-braked hybrid, combine this with vastly increased acceleration and top speeds, and you do have a couple of hairy moments while you’re learning the bike. In terms of modifications, I’ve ‘commuterised’ the bike and adding Koolstop brake shoes, a rear rack, SPD pedals and SKS raceblades. I’ve ridden her through all weathers and have noticed a decent increase in my average speed.

If I were a competitive cyclist I can see that I’d want a sportier bike and that’s probably why Trek have dropped it from the 2011 range. The job this bike does is starting to be filled by the Tricross and Kona Jake The Snake’s of this world, which I’d argue are that bit more versatile owing to their 32mm tyres.

However because it’s an end of line bike, you get a lot of kit for the money.

I’m looking forward to taking the rack off this bike and doing a longer London to Brighton type ride this summer to really test its mettle over a distance.

This is my first road bike and its brilliant .rides very smooth and so much quicker than my mountain bike and it looks great in silver and black..good components for the price.Got some clipless pedals and shoes which makes it even quicker.great service from evans at Nottingham.
