Great commuter bike

Pros: Good value, Good quality, Comfortable

I bought this bike primarily because of the belt drive - unusually I'm also a big fan of roller brakes and hub gears. The belt drive is awesome. It's very quiet and efficient - makes me wonder why we still have chains, and is fast!

A lot of people complain about roller brakes - my previous bike had roller brakes and they stopped better than any of my disc braked bikes and without any maintenance requirements; and for a commuter crucially for me they are difficult to steal and undesirable (I've lost several sets of disc brakes to theft). So I was initially disappointed when I got the bike as the front brake was poor. A quick investigation revealed it is supplied with the IM50 - which is the lower spec of Shimano's roller brakes - a £35 upgrade to the IM70 and what a difference - easily enough stopping power to throw me over the bars.

In summary - a top quality commuter bike, great for all conditions. Worth the money for the belt drive alone. Should have been specified with a better front brake but with the upgrade makes the perfect commuting machine.

Belt drive problems

No, I do not recommend this product.

Cons: Expensive

I've had the bike 1 year and although initially all was well, in the last few months the rear cog has sheared off the rear hub twice now. A replacement cog costs £60. The belt is also looking worn and was very noisy. So I've had the belt replaced with a chain and its much better. I would not recommend the belt drive. However the rest of the bike is fine.

Pros: Good quality

I've returned to cycling after a break of almost 40 years and bought the Trek Soho on the cycle to work scheme. The best thing about it is the ease of changing gear which you can do when stationery if necessary thus avoiding the missed change with the derailleur type. The ride is very good but the belt drive does make a difference but not enough to put you off. It is silent and smooth but the bike is not as fast as my other (Cirrus comp) which I prefer for speed and manoeuverability. The upside of the Soho is that evrything is covered and out of the rain and muck in the wet weather. One downside will be when you have a puncture (I've already had one in the rear tyre). There is no quick release and no easy way to deal with it. The other negative point is the brakes which although kept dry and covered are nothing like as efficient as traditional brakes. This is something you can get used to however and ride accordingly. My daily commute is 28 miles round trip mostly on cycle track which seems to suit the Soho OK, but it would be most at home on tarmac. This bike is good for the leisurely commuter and feels as though it will last a long time - it should for that price

Yes, I recommend this product.

Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Lightweight

Cons: very rattly brakes

I picked up my new Soho 2010 model on Friday and have done 3 days of commuting - 14 miles each way - into the City of London over just about every city surface: terrible potholey roads, cobbles, tarmac (old and new), occasional pavement(!).

I am impressed with the bike and am enjoying it. My commuting time has sped up as I was previously used to a MTB (too lazy to change the knobbly tyres...!). I wanted a trusty hybrid/commuting bike that could handle bad roads and was as maintenance-free as possible.

The carbon drive mechanism is superb - smooth and silent. The gears take some getting used to after using derraileur. they change best when you're *not* pedalling. Mine seem to slip occassionally, but they might need a tweak now I've been using the bike for a bit. Didn't change down very well when pushing the bike up a steep incline, but that could be tweakable.

Unlike some I do not have any problems with perfomance - they seem to work well and stop me well. The v-brakes on my MTB would provide a harder stop but at speed this would just result in the bike skidding. These drum brakes result in a smoother but very quick and solid stop in my experience so far, meaning more control.

My main gripe is the brakes though. They are extremely rattly over bumpy roads - is this a characteristic of the hub brakes or is something not set up correctly? It's almost embarrassing as I ride over cobbles (which I have to do a couple of times on my daily commute) as it sounds like I'm riding an dodgy, old rattly grandpa bike. It's annoying riding a bike that is almost silent on rare smooth tarmac (thanks to the carbon belt) but where the brakes rattle like crazy over 'normal' London roads. (Someone likened this to the bike equivalent of a Prius... well it's more like a Prius with a tin of marbles strapped to the roof!). If I can get that sorted, I'd be a very happy man... and give the bike a better rating.
