Perfect sportive kits for all types of rider

Part of the fun in being a specialist retailer is helping our customers to pick the right kit for their circumstances.

In fact, it’s more than fun: it’s vital that we help you choose the right equipment because that will help you enjoy cycling and grow as a rider (and maybe come back and buy even more kit as you develop!). And there are no more important specific moments when kit choice is crucial, than challenge rides or sportives. So we’ve used all our experience to pull together three perfect sportive packages for both male and female riders — from sportive newbies, to regular sportivistes, to time-chasing experts.

Sportive Newbies

Men’s kit idea #1

Just because you’re a relatively new sportive rider doesn’t mean you should make do with inferior kit. Novice challenge cyclists actually require specific equipment that will satisfy their particular requirements. Our line-up of suggestions here starts with the Pinnacle Dolomite 4: a bike choice that should be every serious new cyclist’s dream machine, as it’s been created specifically for British conditions. Its Shimano hydraulic disc brakes work well, rain or shine; its Shimano Ultegra gearset will keep you powering on the flat or up hill; and its highly-detailed aluminium frame accepts everything from skinny tyres for speed up to 32c tyres for added comfort.

In terms of clothing, we’ve taken advantage of FWE’s growing line-up of high-quality, but low-cost garments. Even the accessories, such as the FWE Fred Unisex Cap and FWE BKB socks have been tried and tested in real-world British cycling condition by FWE’s crew. One particular highlight is the inclusion of FWE’s new Beacon Comp shoe. Don’t be fooled by the affordable price — this is a genuinely capable road shoe with dual-density footbed, breathable micro-fibre upper and even a micro-adjustable ratchet fastening system.

Women’s kit idea #1

One of the great benefits of the revolution in women’s cycling over the last decade or so is that specialist kit for female riders has filtered down all the way to entry level. Arguably the most important area where this has taken place is in clothing design and garments created especially for women’s body shapes. Our kit choice here starts right at next-to-skin level with a women-specific Helly Hansen Lifa baselayer. Then, it includes some of FWE’s fantastic female-friendly LTR products — jersey, shorts and mitts — with the shorts importantly featuring a women-specific Adriatico padded insert from experts Elastic Interface, designed to provide high comfort in saddle.

And what about that saddle and the bike it’s attached too? Although Pinnacle makes fantastic women’s versions of its Dolomite range (as featured in the men’s selection above), we’ve highlighted an incredible-value Pinnacle Laterite 3 here — a bike that combines excellent frame design with fantastic spec, including Shimano 105 gearset, all for an incredible price. Remember what we said about high-quality women’s products filtering down all the way through budget ranges? The Laterite 3 proves our point.

Regular sportivistes

Men’s kit idea #2

So you’ve become a fairly regular sportive rider and you want to take your big event experience to the next level, how do you go about it? The first thing to say is that we really rate the new range of clothing from Kalf, especially the Flux Print jersey and shorts which manage to combine truly fantastic high-level performance and comfort with — rather uniquely for serious cycling kit — very attractive colourways and aesthetics. Simply put, it’s nice to finally wear something that works perfectly but also looks a little more exciting than typically staid top-end cycle clothing.

When you’re looking for mainstream kit infused with cutting-edge science, Giro is a pretty reliable source. The Giro Foray helmet we’ve highlighted here features MIPS technology to help stop your brain twisting in a fall and prevent concussions; meanwhile, the Giro Empire E70 shoes features new-school/old-school knit technology for comfort and breathability.

Finally, what bike are you actually going to ride? The Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra is just about the perfect dedicated sportive machine, with an enticing ability to provide both efficient raw power delivery and all-day rideability. It’s light, quick and comfortable — the only problem is that it won’t leave you with any excuses!

Women’s kit idea #2

When it comes to Kalf’s fantastic catalogue of high-performance cycle clothing, experienced female sportive riders enjoy much the same benefits as male riders. Again, we’ve picked out the exciting Flux Print jersey that combines superb function with eye-catching style. However it’s also worth mentioning Kalf’s Club Print women’s bib short with its tightly woven four-way stretch Lycra that provides compression, durability and moisture wicking at a minimal weight; and also has a high-quality Elastic Interface Club pad for long-ride comfort.

Elsewhere in our selection we have two important products from two different manufacturers that share high-performance values, high-quality construction and even the same name. The first is Louis Garneau’s Ruby II shoe, which won a Eurobike award for its X-Comfort Zone technology. This innovative design allows a rider’s feet and toes to naturally splay, helping to improve power, reduce injuries, and promote incredible levels of comfort.

Then there’s our second Ruby: the Specialized Ruby Sport road bike. Specialized’s Ruby series has developed over years and represents the zenith of mainstream women’s road bikes. This particular model features a FACT 9r carbon frame with Women’s Endurance Geometry and Specialized’s unique Future Shock suspension with 20mm of travel to deal with bumpy sportive roads.

Time-chasing sportive experts

Men’s kit idea #3

Sportives might not be races, per se, but they’re not exactly Sunday morning potters either. If your goal is to get to the finish line as quickly as possible, without compromise, you’re probably going to be interested in at least race-inspired kit. Leading the way in this selection is kit from two brands well known among pro riders: Castelli and Specialized.

Italian clothing has long be lauded as the very best high-performance cyclewear — in no small part due to Castelli’s own long and successful history. The Castelli AR 4.1 jersey we have picked out here was once the same jersey worn by WorldTour racers and has now been updated for more universal use. Meanwhile, the Castelli Free Aero Race Kit bib shorts actually are the same shorts worn by the pros and are built to cope with their most pressing demands: efficient aerodynamics and ultra comfort.

Specialized’s S-Works kit is also at the zenith of cycle performance. The Evade 2 helmet manages to combine lightweight, aerodynamics and ventilation, while the S-Works shoe offers a perfect mix of comfort, style and power transfer.

And we haven’t even mentioned our choice of bike yet. BMC’s Roadmachine 02 Two uses an unparalleled level of design integration to provide the kind of performance most riders can only dream about.

Women’s kit idea #3

American brand Gore has probably done more than any other manufacturer (and over a longer period of time) to provide female riders with high-performance specifically-designed cycle clothing. Today, its C5 range is created with optimised sport-specific features, with special attention paid to shape, form and fitting. The C5 Women’s Bib Shorts have a particularly snug fit for comfort, while the C5 Jersey combines a close race-inspired fit with updated aesthetics and durable fabric for added longevity.

There’s certainly no scrimping in the rest of our line-up, either. Specialized’s S-Works Evade 2 makes a reappearance here as does a women-specific version of the S-Work Road Shoe. And we’ve even included a pair of Oakley’s incredible new Flight Jacket glasses — although you’ll have to pop into your nearest Evans Cycles store and buy these in person if you’re tempted, as they are exclusive to bricks and mortar stores until July 2018.

Finally, we’ve highlighted Trek’s fantastic women’s Domane range, which features IsoSpeed decoupling technology to really take the sting out of rough road surfaces without compromising speed, control or stability. In fact, it’s technology that has helped Fabian Cancellara win over the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix, so it should easily cope with even the toughest sportive!
