Prudential RideLondon Training Ride Wimbledon

INTRODUCTION

Join us at our Wimbledon Store on Sunday 28th April for our fourth Prudential RideLondon training ride. As part of Evans Cycles partnership with Prudential RideLondon this year we’re hosting a series of training rides from March to May to help you build up your fitness and prepare for participating in RideLondon. The events are designed to help build up your mileage and get time on the bike whilst some will also give you the chance to ride roads and climbs that will feature in the Prudential Ride London course.

Please note this event won’t be waymarked but below you will find links to download the route and maps to print out to make navigation easier. You are free to complete the ride at your own pace or for those that would like to ride with others we’ll have some of our staff riding at various different paces and your welcome to ride in a group with them.

The ride is free to enter but you do need to register in advance as places are limited.

TRAVEL

By Car – The ride starts from our Wimbledon store which is located on Gladstone Road in South Wimbledon. If you’re not familiar with the area you can use postcode SW191QT to find the store or visit the store page for a location map – Evans Cycles Wimbledon Store Information

Parking – There’s is no parking available at the store for those taking part in the ride but there are several town centre car parks to choose from that are only a short ride away.

By Train – Wimbledon railway station is less than half a mile away from the store although you should check train times and any bike carriage restrictions for Sunday mornings if you’re planning to arrive by train. For details on train times visit the National Rail Enquiries site.

REGISTRATION AND TIMINGS

The store will be open from 08:30 for riders to arrive and sign in. Participation is free but we do need all participants to sign up so we have a record of who is riding with us in case anything happens whilst out on the ride.

If you’ve already signed up online just head to the registration desk so we know you’ve arrived or if you haven’t already signed before the day complete an entry form at the store and take it to the registration desk.

We’ll ride out from around 09:30 and will stagger starts slightly for the different paced groups rather than all start at once.

RIDE GROUPS

You’re free to ride on your own or in your own group with friends using the GPS files but if you’d like to join our staff and a group of similar paced riders we will be setting off in 3 groups –

Group 1 – Expected pace 15mph or above

Group 2 – Expected pace under 15mph

Group 3 – Pace of the slowest rider, making sure no one gets lefts behind

Whilst we will try and ride together this is sometimes difficult especially when riding with people for the first time or where riders suffer from mechanicals. All riders should have the means to navigate the route on their own should they get separated from the groups.

Please note the route takes in some quite urban riding so the expected pace is based on elapsed time taking into consideration stopping at traffic signals, etc.

ROUTE INFORMATION
Starting from our Wimbledon store we’ve designed a route that brings together some of London’s cycling hot spots. We head towards Kingston-upon-Thames and Hampton Court, roads made famous in the 2012 Olympics before onto the epicentre of London cycling, Richmond Park. It’s then on past the famous Kew Gardens and back via Wimbledon Common.

For those not familiar with the area this route involves mainly urban riding through the city rather the quiet traffic free country lanes.

Route Stats – 40 miles/63 km with 1,070 ft/326 metres of elevation gain.

INSURANCE

No one likes to think about things going wrong but accidents can happen and we think it’s important that riders understand their own responsibilities. Whilst we have public liability insurance in place that covers Evans Cycles and the actions of it’s staff, it doesn’t cover you for your own actions or for actions of other third parties. In simple terms that means if you cause an accident that is found to be your fault you are personally responsible for any injury to yourself or others and for any damage to yours of other peoples property. Sorry if that all sounds a bit heavy, we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable ride so please ride sensibly, control your speed and don’t take unnecessary risks.

We recommend all riders have their own insurance arrangements in place to cover such accidents. If you ride regularly and are concerned about your own insurance cover you’ll find British Cycling or CTC membership can offer you some protection or there are several specialist cycle related insurance services on the market.

GROUP RIDING

If you’re not familiar in riding with a group then there are some good tips in this British Cycling Ride Smart video on group riding.

WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS

We’ll be keeping an eye on the weather as we head towards the ride and whilst we are hoping for some fine and dry conditions this time of year can be very changeable and often even on dry bight days temperatures can be low and we get early morning frosts. Even if the morning is frost free take it easy on the corners, there are likely to be damp patches and roads can be greasy at this time of year. Remember there are no prizes for the fastest time and this event is about getting some steady social miles in rather than racing around at full speed.

You can find the latest Met Office Weather forecast at Wimbledon Weather Forecast.

Like most areas of the UK there’s always the risk of potholes, poor surfacing or gravel especially on some of the smaller lanes; always keep alert and whilst riding in a group signal any hazards to riders behind you.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS NOT A RACE

This is a social ride, there are no rankings or prizes on offer and we’re not recording your time. Please help us to promote a good image for cyclists by not riding in such a way as to unnecessarily obstruct the road or upset other users.

The ride is all on the public roads so please obey the Highway Code, stop at junctions where appropriate and obey any traffic lights. Do not ride at uncontrolled speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. Although we have event insurance it does not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian you may be held responsible for any damages or injuries caused by your riding.

QUESTIONS?

If you have any queries or questions relating to the ride that aren’t covered then please email rideit@evanscycles.com, get in contact with us in the store or post on the facebook event page.

You can also keep up to date with any extra last minute ride information via the Wimbledon Store PRL Training Ride Ride Facebook Event Page.
