Below you’ll find information for participants taking part in our RIDE IT Medway Sportive on Saturday 16th June 2018.
18/06/18 – Thanks to everyone who joined us for the ride, your rider times are now available on the main RIDE IT website and finishers photos on the RIDE IT Cycling Events Facebook page.
14/06/18 – We’ve made a small diversion to the long route due to a road closure shortly after the route passes Hadlow. The GPS route files and the Strava route have been updated.
We’ve teamed up with Medway Council to host our RIDE IT Medway Sportive as part of the Medway Cycling Festival. Based from Medway Sports Park we’ll be hosting a choice of 3 distances within the RIDE IT Medway Sportive from the 31 mile short route right up to the more challenging 80 mile long route that takes riders south into the Kent countryside.

By Car – Medway Sports Park is located on Mill Road close to the centre of Gillingham, you’re best to approach on the B2004 Gillingham Gate Road then turning left into Mill Road. For sat nav users the post code is ME7 1HF but mine always seems to get a bit confused by some road layout changes. Please note the information below regarding parking arrangements.
Parking – For those arriving by car please head for the Sports Park where parking marshals will direct you where to park. We have parking available at the event centre which we plan to fill first then overflow arrangements in place once the parking at the event centre fills up. The parking marshals will direct you as appropriate.
By Train – Gillingham railway station is a short ride away from Medway Park and well served by trains from London and the surrounding area. Visit www.southeasternrailway.co.uk for times and information.
By Bike – Gillingham is on the National Cycle Network Route 1 and also has several local cycle routes, for more details and to plan your route visit the Sustrans website.
The event will be hosted from Medway Sports Park which will also be the centre for the other Medway Cycling Festival activities over the same weekend. Registration is to the rear of the building and will be signed on your arrival.
Once you have registered and are ready to ride please head to the start area near the athletics track. On completing the ride you need to return to the same point to record a finish time.

REGISTRATION & TIMINGS
Registration will be open from 8:00am to 09:45am but long route riders must arrive, register and start the ride before 9:30am. Please follow the signs for registration after you’ve arrived.
Please ensure you bring your helmet with you to registration, you will not be allowed to register without one so bringing it with you will save a trip back to your car or bike collect it.
Once you have registered and are ready to ride head to the start area by the athletics track for your rider briefing. There are no specific start times per rider so you’re free to join a group and start when you are ready to ride within the following time slots listed below –
Long Route Riders – anytime between 08:30 and 09:30.
Medium, Short and Fun Riders – anytime between 08:30 and 10:00
We aim to have all riders return by 5pm so if you start in one or the earlier start groups that should give you over 8 hours to complete the ride.
TIME CUT OFFS
Long Route – For riders doing the long route there will be a time cut off at the long ride split. This is approximately 33 miles from the start and you need to pass before 12:15. If you arrive at the split after this time you will be diverted onto one of the shorter route distances.
All routes – The event centre closes and all vehicles must be off site by 4:30pm. If you start in one or the earlier start groups that should give you over 8 hours to complete the ride. Any riders who are behind schedule to complete the ride before 4:30pm maybe collected by our sweeper van.
On the course there are a number of feed stops (how many depends on your route distance) and all food and drink at the feed stops is included in your entry. The feed stops are sponsored by High 5 Sports Nutrition and will have High 5 Energy Drink and High 5 Energy Gels or High 5 Energy Bars as well as selection of regular food such as cake, flapjack, jelly beans, bananas, peanuts, crisps, etc.
Post ride food and drink will be available to purchase once you arrive back at Medway Sports Park from the sports centre café.
There are a choice of 4 ride distances to choose from, all routes are circular, starting and finishing from Medway Sports Park.
RIDE IT Medway Sportive Long Route – 82 miles (132km) with 4,635 feet (1,410m) elevation gain
2 Feed stops at approximately 25 miles (Doddington Village Hall) and 56 miles (Underriver Village Hall)
RIDE IT Medway Sportive Medium Route – 50 miles (80km) with 2.975 feet (910m) elevation gain
Feed stop at approximately 25 miles (Doddington Village Hall)
RIDE IT Medway Sportive Short Route – 30 miles (48km) with 2,195 feet (670m) elevation gain
Feed stop at approximately 17 miles (Penenden Heath)
After completing your route please head around the athletics track and back through the finish timing point to register your finish time. If you don’t head through the timing point you won’t register a finish time and will show as a DNF when we publish the rider times.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS NOT A RACE
There are no rankings or prizes on offer, all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running popular and friendly events by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. The majority of the ride is on the public roads so please obey the Highway Code, stop at junctions where appropriate and obey any traffic lights. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. Although we have event insurance it does not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian you will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.
PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR HORSE RIDERS & OTHER TRAIL USERS
The ride takes place on public roads and we don’t have exclusive use of these for the event. Please be look out for other trail users particularly horse riders who frequently use the bridleways in this area. Make them aware of your presence and pass wide and slow should you encounter any. The leaflet below from the BHS gives lots of useful advice for both cyclists and horse riders and we would recommend all riders have a read through before the ride. No one likes to think about things going wrong but accidents can happen and we think it’s important that riders understand their own responsibilities. All our events have public liability insurance in place that covers Evans Cycles and the actions of it’s staff, it doesn’t cover you for your own actions. In simple terms that means if you cause an accident that is found to be your fault you are personally responsible for any injury to yourself or others and for any damage to yours of other peoples property. Sorry if that all sounds a bit heavy, we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable ride so please ride sensibly, control your speed and don’t take unnecessary risks.

WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS
We’ll be keeping an eye on the weather over the coming days and hoping for some hot and sunny conditions. Please check the forecast in the days before the ride and dress appropriately for the conditions, you can check out the latest forecast here – BBC Weather Medway
Most of the roads seem in good condition but like all areas of the UK there’s always the risk of potholes, poor surfacing or gravel especially on some of the smaller lanes. Please always keep alert and if riding in a group signal any hazards to riders behind you.
We’ll be doing our final course inspection on the Friday before the ride so we will update if we find any other specific areas of caution.
MAPS & GPX FILES
All riders will be given a hard copy of the route map at registration. Please keep this with you, even if you’re using a GPS, as it has useful information such as emergency contact numbers and the location of the ride splits and feed stations.

Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail once online entry closes directing you back here for the final GPS files. Whilst you’re welcome to download and view the provisional files we suggest you download the final version the day before the event just in case we have to make any last minute route diversions.
If you do not receive your pre event email please remember it will have been sent to the email address you used when booking the ride and do check it hasn’t been trapped in your junk emails folder. If you still don’t have it then email me on email@example.com so I can check your entry and send you a copy.
RIDER TIMES & PHOTOGRAPHS
Your rider times will be published on our website 24-48 hours after the ride, once available you’ll find them via the Rider Times link at www.evanscycles.com/ride-it
Finish line photographs will be published on our Facebook page shortly after the ride, you’ll find them at www.facebook.com/rideitcyclingevents. You can tag, share or download the photo’s directly from the Facebook gallery. Whilst we try and capture everyone this isn’t always possible so please don’t be disappointed if we miss you.
