RIDE IT Peak District 2018

Hi All

Sportive on Sunday is now SOLD OUT. Due to a last minute rush we have reached capacity and there will be no entries on the day. There are no waiting lists as we factor in no shows when setting the maximum figure.

We’re up in the Peak District getting ready to set out the courses for this weekend’s RIDE IT Peak District event. As we haven’t been out yet I can’t give you any trail conditions but there’s been a little rain and it drains pretty well so hopefully it’ll all be dry under wheel at the weekend! As always, it’s going to be a tough ride no matter which day you are signed up for but you are going to be treated to some great scenery to distract you from the pain. There’s a reason this ride is  5/5 on the difficult rating…..

 So, on to the details.

PLEASE BRING YOUR HELMET TO REGISTRATION. You will not be able to register without it and you’ll have to go back to your car to retrieve it.

Event centre address

New Mills School
Church Lane
New Mills
High Peak
SK22 4NR

There is parking available on site in the marked bays. Once this is full there is additional parking around the back of the school ( We’ll put some signs up for this but the first parking is a one way system so when you pop back out onto the road turn right, at the cross roads turn right and then at the DIY shop 100mts turn right!!) If we manage to fill this then there’s the road outside.

Please do not go to the rear parking first as the gates will be closed until the front parking is full and we can man the rear.

Just inside on the right – follow signs.

This is in the 6th form centre, follow signs to registration. Open from 8am to 9.45am. If you are on the MTB please do not come to registration any earlier as we have loads to set up and wont be able to register you before this

From start tent.

Fun/Short/Medium – 8.30am to 10am

Long – 8.30am to 9.45 am

Food and hot drinks will be available inside at registration. We’ll have Free Tea and coffee available in the morning and when you come back there will be hot food availabale.  ( big hotdogs with cheese for £3.50 and Toasties with various fillings available from £2.50

Event Centre close time

The caretaker we have had for the past 8 years has retired and the school is now being opened and closed by a security firm. This means that we can’t rely on some goodwill at the end of the day if any of you are late back. Please make sure you are on track to be back at 4.30pm latest to give you some time to put your bikes in your cars and leave the site. It’s not usually a problem but if you are struggling at any of the splits then take the shorter route. Also, if you miss the cut off for any of the route splits then please do not ride this on your GPS. Our course clearers will be in front of you taking down arrows and once they are back we assume everyone is off the course. If you take a split after the cut off you are removing yourself from the event and any back up.

In order for us to be out at 5pm all food, hot and cold, will be stopped at 4pm.

Before I go any further I would like to point out that THIS IS NOT A RACE. You will not be given a rank and all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running a popular friendly event by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. Stop at junctions and traffic lights, and obey the highway code. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. We do not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian YOU will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding. Evans sell insurance that starts from around £21 for a years cover and can be found HERE

It’s looking a bit of a mixed bag weather wise  over the next few days with showers and sunshine. This shouldn’t affect the ground conditions too much as it’s never particularly muddy. This rain might make the rocky sections a bit slippery though so take care and keep that speed down!

It’s also going to be a tough course, hence only two routes. Please be cautious on those descents, they are going to be steep and technical so keep your speed and bike under control. Please WALK where you are asked to, you go through a garden and a farm where children play so obey any signs.

Keep yourselves hydrated – there will be one drink station on the short and two on the Medium ( which is the longest route) with plenty of water.

As it’s the school holidays I expect there to be a lot of walkers around so please be courteous to them all, remember they want to enjoy the countryside too and not get constantly buzzed by bikers!!#

PROVISIONAL GPX files can be found HERE

Short 14.5miles  elevation 2600ft  Drink station at 7.5miles with Loos

Long 25.5 miles elevation 5100ft Drinks at 10 and 18 miles ( with loos )

Event centre is closed at 5pm.  – Hot food will finish at 4pm.

It’s not a race!

Please give way to other trail users, walkers, horse riders etc. If you come across a Horse, please let the rider know you are there in plenty of time and follow their instructions. Remember, if you spook the horse it might hurt you or other people and you are responsible for you actions and the consequences!! Please also close all gates you might come across.

It’s been a bit mixed weather-wise out there today but the roads are in ok condition but, like the rest of the country, they are prone to pot holes. Please keep your eye out for them and if you are travelling in a group, please shout out warnings to those behind. We also use small lanes, so keep your speed down and be aware that there might be cars around that bend. On larger roads please keep to single file unless it’s safe to do so.

British cycling have produced a few good guides to help with you day in the saddle, have a read:-

This is not a race!!

Please obey the highway code, stop at junctions and only ride two abreast where it is safe to do so – not on main roads or winding country lanes where cars travelling at speed will not be able to see you and stop!!!! If you cause and accident, you are responsible for the consequences and any costs.

GPX files

Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail on Thursday afternoon around 6pm that has links to the GPX files and a guide to show you have to view them interactively. If you have not received this by 7pm tonight please check you junk folder, old accounts, your partners email if they booked and make sure you check the address you booked with! These are all common causes for not getting the mail. If you still don’t have them then email me on dean.stacey@evanscycles.com I’ll check your entry and send you a copy.

See you all there!

Hard work was Saturday but did the long 27 miles I set out for. Bit of bad language and slipping and sliding. Still a youtube video without the bad tampered walking bits in!.
Nice location. Caroline had a walk to the shops. Did a £31 hotel in stockport friday. Was not trying to get at New Mills by 8.30am. No chance. Did Buxton 10 miles away on way home. Food and a walk around a nice park I see on google streetview. Home at 9.30. Sat nav did odd things, half journey done before a motorway, Stil it got home. knows more than me, Sat nav makes us all lazy.

Very well organised and routes very well marked. Enjoyed it despite the weather.

I left a left foot shoe (scarpa) in the car park. Please let me know if it gets found. Thanks. richard.t.stain@gmail.com

Hi Dean,

Sportive today was great fun!

Today I unfortunately left some equipment in a red Aldi bag for life in the registration room. Is there any chance it was swept up by the Evans team on clearing up or is my best approach to getting it back contacting the school?
