Review: ION Women’s Mountain Bike Range

The choice of women’s mountain bike gear continues to grow, and ION are leading the way with clothing that combines performance, fit and style.

Originally a water sports brand and market leader for wetsuits and Neoprene, ION launched its functional cycling range for men and women in 2012, offering clothing, accessories, gloves and protection.

We took the women’s Scrub top and Traze Amp shorts – both designed for All Mountain and Enduro riders, as well as the Raid Amp shoes for flat pedals and K Lite knee protectors – for a ride.

The Scrub Amp top is great looking and proof that pink can look seriously sporty. But it’s the attention to detail that really made us love it. It’s cut with ¾ length sleeves and a longer body so that you don’t get a gap at the back in riding position. It’s also crafted in high performance sports fabric: the front panel is DriRelease® jacquard mesh that gives ventilation with the look of regular cotton – and also dries four times faster than it (very handy when you’re on a multi-ride trip!). The sleeves and back are made from breathable jersey with a Sanitized® finish to help keep you dry and fresh. This makes for supreme comfort while riding, even when you are out all day.  The integrated microfibre wipe for your goggles and a lift pass pocket are additional details that make this top super versatile, no matter how hard you ride.

The Traze Amp shorts are extremely lightweight and very stretchy, as well as breathable and quick drying. They are superbly comfortable in higher temperatures, and so easy to wash and dry, ready for the next day.  But despite their feather light feel, they are also surprisingly robust, with triple stitched seams.

There are two zip pockets at the front, including an integrated pouch for your phone (a padded sleeve within the pocket) to protect against light showers and small impacts.  It’s positioned slightly to the side so that the bulk of the phone doesn’t interfere with your leg movement – a really clever touch.

The shorts are cut in a ‘boardshort’ shape that is easy to wear and works with knee armour. There is an adjustable waistband and popper fastening for ease of fit. Finally, these shorts come in some seriously good-looking colour combinations: they really are some of the best looking out there.

The Raid Amp is a unisex flat pedal shoe designed to protect your foot from knocks and scrapes as well as grip the pedal. It features extra padding on the crank side of the shoe to protect the ankles, and a toe box for protection should you hit rocks or roots. The sole is ‘supersticky’ and also offers good traction while walking. A combination of stiffness in the longitudinal axis with flexibility across the lateral axis helps achieve optimum power transmission and steering impulses while pedalling. The shoe is also reinforced on the most exposed and stressed areas for durability. Again, we love the look of them!

A balance between comfort and protection is essential if you’re going to wear body armour all day. The K Lite knee pads are lightweight and breathable and feature a slim outline, yet offer excellent protection thanks to padding and a hard cap with high shock absorption values that distribute loads during a crash. ION have used their wetsuit tailoring expertise to shape the pads for comfort: a snug neoprene belt running around the knee keeps the pad in place, and it’s open at the back which helps keep you cool and the joint moving freely. Wide silicone grippers at the top and bottom give extra security against slipping. The pads are unisex and available in sizes S – XL so should fit most riders.
