Spotlight Bike: Norco Range

With the off-road haven of Whistler as their playground, the team at Norco truly live and breathe mountain biking. If you’re looking for the ultimate off-road play machine, created by a company that is famed for creating incredible performance products, the Norco Range A2 enduro bike — exclusive to Evans in the UK and currently enjoying a great discount in the Evans Cycles Sale — could be the perfect choice.

Updated for 2018, the Norco Range A2 aluminium mountain bike has been purpose-built to rip downhill, munch up miles, and even hit uphill slopes with category-bending capability. It features cutting-edge suspension performance and optimised geometry for each wheel size, allowing it to climb with the best yet also deliver confidence-inspiring stability and control for serious speed. In fact, whether you want to shred gnarly singletrack, do a few laps of the bike park, or even race in the Enduro World Series, the Range is the ultimate accomplice.

How it does this is thanks to Norco’s ability to combine fantastic geometry with impressive speccing. The Range A2 aluminium frame’s enduro-based geometry is low, long and slack, with chainstay length increasing proportionately to front centre length with each frame size. This means that all riders can achieve optimal body position and weight distribution for superior handling at high speeds, while the wide wheel rims, wide bars and short stems really encourage aggressive riding.

Dressed for success

Add in 150mm of progressive, small-bump-insulating trunnion-mounted rear suspension thanks to the Fox Performance Float shock — and 160mm of fork travel courtesy of the RockShox Lyric Boost — and you have a rig that provides a compliant ride when you want it but also benefits from superior stiffness. Combined, these ingredients are the perfect recipe for fast, fun descending.

That suspension set-up isn’t the only place where Norco’s designers have maximised spec. The 1x, 11-speed SRAM GX-1 gearset marries high performance with ultra reliability, while the SRAM Guide R hydraulic disc brakes with whopping 200mm (front) and 180mm (rear) rotors provide enough stopping power and modulation to not just survive any descent, but adjust your speed with pinpoint accuracy. Complete the build with a Race Face Aeffect chainset, TranzX dropper post, and Maxxis Minion 2.4in tyres fitted to WTB rims mounted on SRAM hubs, and you have a package with no apparent weaknesses.

Choices, choices, choices

So what about those wheels? The Range A2 actually offers you a choice of hoop size: you can go for the big-rolling, high-cruising 29er, or the more on-trend and slightly more reactive 650b option. Both bikes offer the same levels of ability with frame geometry that has been honed to perfectly compliment the different wheel sizes. All you need to do is choose which you prefer.

And the choices don’t end there. The full Norco Range line-up extends from the more budget-orientated A3 (650b only, currently £1,950 in the Evans Cycles Sale) that features the same aluminium frame but with slightly lower-level speccing options, and heads all the way up to the Range C2, available in either 29er or 650b options but this time mounted to a premium Norco carbon frame.

So, whatever your budget and requirements, if you want a truly peerless enduro machine, look no further.
