Over 100 years ago Frank Bowden purchased a bicycle company in Nottingham England, in order to work together with engineers to create high-performance bicycle gear. His engineers used patents from Henry Sturmey and James Archer to create the first Sturmey-Archer 3-speed bicycle gear hub back in 1902.
Since then, Sturmey-Archer has been a pioneer in the design of internal gear hubs, hub brakes and dynamo bike lighting, with an overall focus of making cycling easier and safer. Sturmey-Archer head office moved to Taiwan in 2000 in order to access better technology, resulting in many design and quality improvements. High quality, design, research and development are now the cornerstones of the company.
